TROON, Scotland -- It could be argued that Royal Troon, site of the 145th playing of The Open this week, was the first modern golf course used for the championship. It replaced nearby neighbor Prestwick because the original venue used to stage the tournament was deemed insufficient to handle the growing number of spectators.Of course, Troons debut was way back in 1923, when several other Open venues had yet to find their way into what is now a list of 14 venues that have staged the worlds oldest championship.
