GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes spent most of overtime on their heels, chasing pucks and dodging shots. The Coyotes finally cleared the puck after a big save by Mike Smith and had a man advantage on a delayed penalty.Thats when they turned to Oliver Ekman-Larsson, the king of overtime hockey.Ekman-Larsson set an NHL record for game-winning goals by a defenseman last season and picked up where he left off Saturday night, scoring at 1:48 of overtime to help the Coyotes begin their 20th season in the desert with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.Obviously, Im playing with a lot of confidence playing 3 on 3 in overtime, said Ekman-Larsson, who leads NHL defensemen with 21 winning goals the past three seasons. The Flyers dominated the early part of overtime, but a sprawling save by Smith on Matt Read allowed the Coyotes to clear the puck and set up at the other end.Philadelphias Jakub Voracek was then hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty, allowing Smith to skate off for an extra attacker. The Coyotes worked the puck around quickly, with Radim Vrbata sending out a pass from behind the goal to Martin Hanzal, who one-timed it to Ekman-Larsson.The four-time NHL All-Star gathered the puck and lifted it over a diving Steve Mason for his latest winner.Hanzal also had a goal, along with Shane Doan and Brad Richardson for the Coyotes.I dont think my heart rates been that high before with that flurry that went on what felt like forever, said Smith, who stopped 27 shots. Then high-stepping to the bench and winning, celebrating with my teammates on the bench was crazy there for a few minutes. The Flyers rallied from a 3-1 deficit after playing the night before and tied it on Reads goal early in the third period. But Philadelphia continued to struggle on the power play -- 0 for 4 -- and couldnt capitalize on numerous chances in overtime when it appeared to have the Coyotes on the ropes.Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds also scored for the Flyers. Mason stopped 31 shots.Sometimes you just dont get the bounces, Simmonds said. (Smith) makes a bunch of good saves there. Then they turn around and go to the other end, get a scramble and the puck ends up in our net.Coming off a rebuilding season, the Coyotes are hoping to take the next step two decades after moving to the desert from Winnipeg. The Flyers stood pat over the offseason after reaching the playoffs last year and opened the 2016-17 season with a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. The Coyotes, not surprisingly, had a jump in their step for the opener and scored their first goal on a power play midway through the first period.Doan, who led Arizona with 28 goals last season, got it by gathering a loose puck and flicking it past Mason, who was run into by two players. The goal was upheld after a challenge by the Flyers for goalie interference. The Flyers gathered themselves after the slow start, tying it on Raffls deflection of a shot by Nick Schultz from the point.Hanzal scored late in the period on a rebound and Richardson got the Coyotes off to a quick start in the second, scoring a short-handed goal 17 seconds in to make it 3-1.The Flyers rallied despite the short turnaround from last night.Simmonds pulled Philadelphia within 3-2 by slipping the puck between Smiths pads in the second period and Read used a nifty move to tie it early in the third, deking Smith to get him out of position before knocking in a backhander.Thought for a back to back, thats the effort you want, Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said.Game notes Arizonas Jacob Chychrun and Christian Dvorak each had assists for their first NHL points. ... The Flyers are scoreless in six chances on the power play this season. ... The Coyotes are 8-2-0 when opening a season at home since moving to Arizona.UP NEXTThe Flyers play at Chicago on Tuesday before heading back to Philadelphia for their home opener against Anaheim.Arizona kicks off a six-game trip in Ottawa on Tuesday. STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Sweden became the first host country to win an IIHF World Championship in 27 years in large part because of the addition of Vancouver Canucks forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin during the tournament. Henrik scored the winning goal, assisted on a third goal and scored into an empty net in Swedens 5-1 victory over Switzerland in Sundays sold-out championship game at Globe Arena. "To play in front of your home fans in your country and be able to win, that doesnt happen often so thats pretty amazing," Henrik said. "I dont want to compare it to the NHL because I think its different, but as far as national team, its up there with an Olympic gold medal for sure." Henrik compiled four goals and five assists and twin brother Daniel had a goal and five assists in four games they played after the Canucks were swept in the first round of NHL playoffs by the San Jose Sharks. The twin brothers had the most impact on Swedens power play. After scoring just two power-play goals in their first seven games of the tournament, Sweden scored five in their final three games. Daniel assisted on four and Henrik on three. Henrik batted a puck out of the air for a power-play goal in the second period Sunday that pushed Sweden ahead 2-1. "They showed theyre two of the best players in the world," teammate Gabriel Landeskog said. "I can confidently say that, whether they won a (Stanley) Cup or not. "Everyone was feeding off of them." Erik Gustafsson, Simon Hjalmarsson and Loui Eriksson also scored for Sweden, which became the first country to win the title at home since the Soviet Union in Moscow in 1986. Nashville Predators defenceman Roman Josi scored for Switzerland. The Swiss, coached by Canadian Sean Simpson of Brampton, Ont., was the surprise of the tournament. Unbeaten until the final, the country hadnt won a medal of any colour in 60 years until Sunday. "Were disappointed about the game," Simpson said. "We lost it, and we won nine games before. Not many people believed before the tournament that we would play in a world championship final. "Im very proud of the work our team has done and about the silver medal. Switzerland has to be proud of this team." Josi, 22, became the first player from his country to be nnamed the tournaments most valuable player.ddddddddddddHe had four goals and five assists in 10 games and was also named best defenceman. Buffalo Sabres goaltender Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves for Sweden and was named top goaltender. Former NHL goalie Martin Gerber stopped 22 shots for the Swiss. The United States defeated the Finns 3-2 in a shootout for bronze. Canada finished fifth after losing in the quarter-finals for a fourth straight year. Sweden started the tournament on a sour note with a 3-2 loss to the Swiss. They struggled to generate offence for much of the preliminary round, in which they finished third in their pool at 5-2 behind Switzerland and Canada. The arrival of the Sedins injected confidence into the team and revitalized Swedens attack. Sweden scored two power-play goals in their 3-2 shootout win over Canada in the quarter-final and another two in a 3-0 victory over Finland in the semifinal. Canucks defenceman Alex Edler joined Swedens lineup with the Sedins, but he did not play in the semifinal or final. He was suspended for two games for his knee-on-knee contact with Canadian captain Eric Staal in the quarter-final. "We had a meeting when everyone came, when the Sedins and Edler came," Landeskog said. "We had a team meeting and talked about how its us against the world, media were against us and sometimes the crowd were against us. For us, it motivated us. It united us in the room and brought us together. "For us to come together like we did, especially in the playoffs, was an amazing feeling. Obviously beating Canada in the quarter-finals kind of gave us that push to keep going and we rolled over Finland and rolled over here." Daniel was hit hard into the open gate on Swedens bench in the third period. He was in pain, but shook it off for the post-game celebrations. "Weve been to the Stanley Cup finals before. We lost in a seventh game. Thats obviously tough," Daniel said. "Won Olympic gold. This is going to be up there with Olympic gold I would say. To do it on home ice is pretty neat."
