PV Sindhus coach Pullela Gopichand has sought to temper expectations as she returns to the international circuit at the Denmark Open. The last couple of months have been a blizzard of felicitation functions after her sparkling silver winning run at the Rio Olympics and Gopi says that while they did the best they could on the training court, it would be unrealistic to expect Sindhu to replicate her Olympic success as soon as she returns to competitive play.We peaked for the Olympics, the entire training was done in such a way that we were geared for the Olympics, Gopi told ESPN. So I dont think it is possible that we can play at the same level again a month or two months afterwards. Having said that we have worked hard, she has put in a lot of effort and is motivated and that has helped in her training. Shes always had training on her mind, all the time. We have managed to sneak in days of training which were important. Overall I am happy with the way she has reacted to the last month and a half.On her way to silver at Rio, Sindhu defeated three higher ranked players before succumbing to world No. 1 Carolina Marin in a thrilling three-game final. She has now risen to a career-high ranking of eight. However, Sindhu is yet to win a Super Series title, the elite tournaments on the badminton circuit. Her best result: making the final at the Denmark Open itself last year.Gopi is unconcerned by talk that Sindhu must break the drought to be counted among the games elite players. It is different benchmarks for different people, he said. She has got medals at the biggest stage such as the World Championships and Olympics. The colour of the medal could have been better is what we can say but really at the highest stage, where it mattered, she has delivered and done so multiple times. She is still only 21. At this stage, with the kind of CV she has, theres no need to panic or think of it on those lines.Gopi admits that Sindhus surge to the podium at Rio has alerted the world to her enormous potential and she can now expect opponents to be analyse and prepare for her with much greater alacrity.
