Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Hey Kerry, In last nights Kings vs. Sharks game, the Kings appeared to have scored a goal shortly after the Sharks made it 2-0 on a power play. The goal was called back because the ref blew the play dead on a premature whistle. The puck never stopped moving and yet it was blown dead. Its obvious the ref would never admit he blew it early and it was a good goal. My question to you is, what can be done to rectify situations like this? Also - during playoffs, when officials make mistakes like this, do they lose the chance to officiate an upcoming game. I understand the game is played at a quick tempo and these guys are doing the best they can and mistakes are made. Im just curious as to what the repercussions are for officials. We all know what they are for players, as the league makes it known. Thanks,Rob KitzanSaskatoon Rob: The reason this goal was negated is because of something referred to as the Referees intent to blow the whistle to stop play. Simply put, that means that once the Ref determines (in his mind) that the puck is frozen or unplayable it is a dead play in that moment irrespective of any delayed time response to physically blow the whistle. This is referenced in the following rules: 31.2 Disputes - As there is a human factor involved in blowing the whistle to stop play, the Referee may deem the play to be stopped slightly prior to the whistle actually being blown. The fact that the puck may come loose or cross the goal line prior to the sound of the whistle has no bearing if the Referee has ruled that the play had been stopped prior to this happening. 78.5 (xii) Disallowed Goals - When the Referee deems the play has been stopped, even if he had not physically had the opportunity to stop play by blowing his whistle. 85.3 Puck Out of Sight - Should a scramble take place or a player accidentally fall on the puck and the puck be out of sight of the Referee, he shall immediately blow his whistle to stop play. As the puck was shot into Antti Niemi with Dustin Penner hovering at the crease along with Kings defensive traffic , Referee Brad Meier determined (in his mind) that the puck was sufficiently frozen and as a result was in the act of blowing his whistle. With Meiers physical action to blow the whistle taking place, the puck continued on its slide path between Niemis pads and became exposed. Whether Dustin Penner nudged the puck over the goal line or if it travelled there under its own steam is of no consequence; nor is the sound of the Referees whistle being heard just after the puck crossed the goal line. All that is of consequence on is this play is that the Referee deemed the play stopped prior to blowing his whistle as outlined in the above rule references. In hindsight the Referees decision to stop play was premature. A "quick whistle" resulted in a good goal being disallowed. Referee Meier would likely be the first guy to tell you so along with how sick it made him feel once he saw a replay. While this is of no consolation to the LA Kings or their fans the Referee didnt have the benefit of a replay or hindsight. He had to make a split second decision at the time. It proved to be the wrong one. So Rob, how can this situation be avoided and/or rectified in the future? You can bet that the Referee, along with the others presently working in the playoffs, will be more patient in determining a frozen puck and their intent to blow the whistle. The other corrective measure should take place over the summer and allow for video review to take place on a play such as this, in addition to all cases where goalkeeper interference is suspected. Since the overriding factor is the moment the Ref determines the play to be dead (in his mind) no one else could review the play to overturn this thought process. This must be done exclusively by the Referee himself. Any inner thoughts he might have had in the nanosecond would most likely be clearly illuminated once he saw the replay to render the correct decision. I maintain the same is true with goalkeeper interference. Give that call back to the Referee(s) on the ice through video review; whether through a Coaches challenge or just vest the Referee with the authority to review the goal at ice level. As far as repercussions of calls to the Officials, all performances are evaluated and decisions are made as to who moves on to the next round. Previously assigned games would not likely be changed since Referees move from one series to another. This was a human error made by a very honest and good Referee. http://www.authenticfootballshoptitans.com/authentic-warren-moon-titans-jersey/ . LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky coach John Calipari once again must figure out how to use his latest talented freshman class, which this year is big and fills voids at many positions. All of which means another season of high expectations at a school where a national championship is always the standard. After finishing 27-9 and losing in the NCAA Tournaments round of 32 last spring, Kentucky appears capable of contending for a ninth NCAA title. This despite losing six players including several regulars such as Associated Press All-American guards Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray, who combined to average 37 points per game last season, and 6-foot-11 Skal Labissiere.Kentucky landed guards DeAaron Fox and Malik Monk, both 6-foot-3 high school All-Americans who join sophomore Isaiah Briscoe (9.9 points, 5.3 rebounds per game) in the backcourt. All can handle the ball and shoot, giving Calipari some options, compared with last years squad run by Ulis. This team will probably have three guys having the ball, and well play off them, Calipari said. One may have it more, but the other two are going to have it a significant amount of time. So that makes it different. But this recruiting class is all about the bigs with the additions of Edrice Bam Adebayo and Sacha Killeya-Jones -- a pair of 610 All-Americans -- and 69 Wenyen Gabriel.Adebayo has an NBA body and is fierce around the basket on both ends of the floor. Killeya-Jones and Gabriel are long and guard the rim as well. The Wildcats also return size with 7-footer Isaac Humphries and 610 redshirt freshman Tai Wynyard, giving Kentucky its tallest frontcourt since the 38-1 team that reached the Final Four two years ago. Nobodys making that grand comparison yet as the team works to form chemistry. We all want the same dream, so we just try to accomplish it together, Monk said. Its easy to sacrifice if you have great players around you.Other things to watch in Kentucky this season:MATURE BRISCOE: Isaiah Briscoe worked out with NBA teams last spring to gauuge his pro prospects before returning for his sophomore season .dddddddddddd Hes more seasoned by the experience, and more muscular. The biggest benefits might be his improved shooting -- which Kentucky needs from him after an inconsistent freshman season -- and his eagerness to lead. It forced me to grow up, Briscoe said of the process. Being one of the few guys to come back (under Calipari), Ill be able to lead these guys.BLUEGRASS GRAYBEARDS: Kentucky has seniors for the second straight season, both of whom could play bigger roles. Forward Derek Willis is working to add defense to his game after averaging career bests of 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds last season and becoming part of the rotation. Guard Dominique Hawkins just aims to stay healthy after his junior year was limited by injuries. Hes a physical defensive specialist being encouraged to shoot more this season.COACHS KID: If things get loud in Rupp near the end of a Kentucky rout, it might be fans clamoring for Calipari to put his son, Brad, on the floor. The 6-foot freshman is a walk-on with an eye toward coaching one day but figures to become a fan favorite for obvious reasons.RENOVATED RUPP: The Wildcats home begins its 40th anniversary season with a new floor and center-hung scoreboard and video screen that has replaced the Big Bertha bank of loudspeakers, which resembled an oversized pine cone. The arena has already added high-definition video boards in the corners and other electronic features to enhance the game experience.KEY GAMES: Kentuckys always-tough nonconference schedule includes matchups against Michigan State on Nov. 15 in the Champions Classic; a home game against UCLA (Dec. 3); consecutive contests against North Carolina (Dec. 17) and at archrival Louisville (Dec. 21); and a Jan. 28 home game against Kansas in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.---Online:www.collegebasketball.ap.org Wholesale Hoodies NFL Shirts Outlet Jerseys NFL Wholesale Cheap NFL Jerseys Free Shipping Wholesale Jerseys Cheap Cheap NFL Jerseys China Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys ' ' '
