COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The leader of the U.S. Olympic Committee warned of turning the effort to fix the worlds broken anti-doping system into a Cold War-style showdown between East and West.Speaking to the U.S. Olympic Assembly on Thursday, chairman Larry Probst reiterated his support for the International Olympic Committees near-unanimous rubber-stamping of president Thomas Bachs decision not to ban the entire Russian team from the Rio Olympics. If were going to address the inadequacies of the current anti-doping system, we cant devolve into a Cold War mentality of us versus them, Probst told the audience of U.S. Olympic leaders. The global system is broken and it needs to be fixed -- the sooner the better. While few dispute the second part of Probsts statement, the idea of framing the Russian doping problem as a political issue certainly plays much better outside the West than inside. The World Anti-Doping Agency and other anti-doping leaders called for a blanket ban of the Russians from Rio after investigations found widespread, state-sponsored doping inside the Russian sports system. Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the doping allegations a dangerous return to ... letting politics interfere with sport.Bach, citing the concept of individual justice over collective punishment, delivered a decision that allowed 271 Russians -- about 70 percent of the countrys proposed roster -- to compete in Rio. Those athletes collected 56 medals, fourth-most in the Games.Among those in the room listening to Probsts speech Thursday were Travis Tygart, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and Max Cobb, the executive director of U.S. Biathlon. Both wanted a complete Russian ban from Rio. Neither was in a mood to undermine Probst and the U.S. Olympic Committee in what is supposed to be a celebration of a successful Olympics and a look ahead to the bid for the 2024 Olympics.USADA spokesman Ryan Madden said the agency had no comment.I remember Larry Probst saying (earlier this summer), that we dont have a political problem, we have a doping problem, Cobb said. Anyone who tries to put this in a political light -- its a red herring. And yet, Probst may not have been speaking only to those in the room.Shortly before his comments, he played a videotaped message from Bach, in which the IOC president congratulated the U.S. Olympic team for its 121 medals at the Rio Games and for its successes off the field, which included the recent appointment of American Angela Ruggiero to the IOC executive board.Bach also lauded Los Angeles for what he called a very strong bid to land the 2024 Olympics. With the Rio Games now over, the L.A. bid moves higher on the USOCs list of priorities. The federation has nothing to gain by alienating itself from international partners, and certainly finds no need to rock the boat too hard on the anti-doping front.Probst said he was looking forward to having a hand in reinventing WADA, and turning it into an agency with stronger investigative powers and the ability to impose fines and sanctions. He will be at an IOC meeting next month during which some proposed changes will be discussed.Probst reiterated the USOCs recent 20 percent increase in funding to USADA, which remains an independent anti-doping agency tasked with testing and education of American athletes and those who train and compete in the United States. But the chairman also stayed firm on a point he made over the summer, after raising his hand in favor of Bachs decision not to bar Russia from the Olympics.Doping in sport isnt simply the problem of one country, Probst said, nor can it be solved by targeting one team. OXON HILL, Md. -- Chris Archer was so excited to pitch for the United States at the World Baseball Classic that he offered to recruit more players to join him.Its OK, general manager Joe Torre said, thats under control. In addition to Archer, the Tampa Bay Rays ace right-hander, the U.S. will have NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals, 2012 NL MVP Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants and 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the 2017 World Baseball Classic. Thats a star-studded start to the roster as the U.S. seeks to put more value in the tournament that it hasnt yet won.As everybody knows our country probably hasnt taken it quite as seriously as some of the other countries in the past, manager Jim Leyland said Monday. We are trying to change that mentality.Getting Scherzer, Posey, McCutchen, Archer, Toronto Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman, Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado and Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones to sign up sends that message. Torre said Miami Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich, Cleveland Indians reliever Andrew Miller and Kansas City Royals starter Danny Duffy committed to play and that he hasnt yet spoken to two-time AL MVP Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels.Any player who hasnt committed to us, the only reason thats been the case is because of conditioning or injury or stuff like that, Torre said. Every single one of these guys that Ive talked to and reached out to, because I text and a lot with them, the reception has been very possitive.ddddddddddddMajor League Baseball on Monday announced the initial list of 30 players set for the tournament, which takes place in March. Among them are 24 All-Stars.Manny Machado, Robinson Cano, Adrian Beltre, Nelson Cruz and Dellin Betances will play for the defending champion Dominican Republic. Felix Hernandez will pitch for Venezuela, which will also have Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Gonzalez on its roster. Each team must submit its final roster by Feb. 6. Torre and the U.S. staff will continue to seek players out before that deadline, but hes thrilled at the excitement of players like Archer, who Leyland described as all fired up to play.Hes over the moon with it, Archer said. When I first talked to him, first contacted him, he was giving me suggestions on who he could call. I said, `Just cool down. Weve got to do this thing with the Players Association. I dont want you to be calling your neighbors in here about this. While some stars like Bryce Harper have reportedly recused themselves from consideration, Leyland said it was important to focus on those who did decide to leave spring training to participate. Were certainly not throwing anybody under the bus that decided not to play, Leyland said. Thats not fair. They all have good reasons, and we honor and respect that. Were going to move on to the players that did decide to play with no animosity towards anybody that did not decide to play.
