DENVER -- Since enduring a rough stretch, rookie left-hander Tyler Matzek has been building on one success after another. Gareth Bale Jersey . Matzek pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout, Nolan Arenado and Drew Stubbs homered, and the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 3-0 Friday night. It was the third straight victory for Matzek (5-9) since snapping a five-game losing streak. "Were seeing a kid get better and better with just about every start," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Ive talked about his poise and maturity and he continues to show that. And he continues to show a very good slider. You saw left-handed hitters and right-handed hitters taking some funny swings at that thing." The Padres managed only one extra-base hit against Matzek -- a leadoff double by Abraham Almonte in the ninth that went over the head of left fielder Corey Dickerson. Matzek struck out six, including three in the third around Rymer Lirianos single, the only other hit to reach the outfield. It was San Diegos third straight loss. "I feel like I was finding my groove in the last two or three games," Matzek said. "Definitely feeling good. Just everythings working: fastball location, slider, changeup, curveball. Everything feels right right now." Matzek was the first Rockies pitcher to go the distance this season. He improved to 5-0 with a 0.97 ERA in five starts in which hes pitched at least seven innings. "I think hes getting better," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Hes probably learned along the way. He had a good live fastball. He has life in the hitting area. Good slider with a hard break late. We just couldnt get to it." Matzek also caught a sharply hit liner that shot right back to him off the bat of Liriano in the eighth and had two sacrifice bunts, the first of which put D.J. LeMahieu in position to score on Charlie Blackmons fifth-inning single. Eric Stults (6-16) went 6 1-3 innings in a solid outing, but again had a lack of run support. The Padres have been shut out an NL-high 17 times this season, including five times when Stults has been on the mound. It was the 15th time in his 28 starts that Stults has received one or no runs of support. Stubbs gave Matzek a lead to work with in the first when he connected on a 2-2 pitch for his 14th home run of the season. Arenado led off the sixth with his 16th home run and second in two games. He drove a 1-0 pitch from Stults into the left field seats. NICE TOUCH: Rockies catcher Michael McKenry made a hustling, off-balance catch of Rene Riveras foul popup to end the third inning, running to the dugout and leaning over the railing to snare the ball, right in front of manager Walt Weiss. McKenry then flipped the ball to Rockies owner Dick Monfort, who was seated behind the dugout. Monfort gave the ball to a fan sitting nearby. ZERO SUM GAMES The 17 shutouts are the most for San Diego since being blanked 19 times in 2011 TRAINERS ROOM Padres: RHP Joaquin Benoit, who hasnt pitched since Aug. 26 because of soreness in his pitching shoulder, was expected to miss at least another seven to 10 days. However, manager Bud Black said he anticipates Benoit will pitch again before the end of the season. An MRI taken a week ago did not reveal any structural damage. Rockies: RHP Jhoulys Chacin, on the DL since late June because of inflammation in his right shoulder, has resumed some throwing activities, but manager Walt Weiss said its unlikely hell return before the end of the season. UP NEXT Padres: RHP Joe Wieland is set to start Saturday nights game against the Rockies in his first big league outing in more than two years. Wieland missed most of the 2012 season, all of 2013 and most of this season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his pitching elbow in July 2012. He last pitched in the majors on May 6, 2012, against Miami at Petco Park. Rockies: LHP Jorge De La Rosa, signed to a two-year contract extension by the Rockies earlier this week, will look to continue his recent success against the Padres. De La Rosa has limited the Padres to three or fewer runs in each of his past four starts. Ashley Williams Jersey . The 25-year-old Brazilian player has only made four Premier League appearances for United this season and underwent a medical test in Italy on Friday. Joe Ledley Jersey . Tristan Jackson returned a missed field goal 129 yards early in the fourth quarter as the Roughriders beat the B.C. http://www.soccerwalesshop.com/joe-allen-wales-UEFA-EURO-jersey/ . - Olympic champion Marielle Thompson accomplished her mission of defending her skicross World Cup title at Nakiska Ski Area on Saturday. MADRID, Spain -- Atletico Madrid finally got the better of Spanish rival Barcelona on Wednesday as Kokes early goal guided his team to a 1-0 win and into the Champions League semifinals with a 2-1 aggregate victory. Adrian Lopez filled in for injured striker Diego Costa and created the fifth-minute goal after hitting the post, as the Atletico forward headed an ensuing cross on to Koke to fire home. The boisterous atmosphere at the Vicente Calderon Stadium unsettled Barcelona early on, and Atletico striker David Villa hit the woodwork twice within the opening 20 minutes. Barcelona dug in but produced few tangible scoring chances apart from a pair of first-half misses by Lionel Messi. Atletico, which leads Barcelona by one point in the league, reached the last four of Europes top competition for the first time since 1974. The teams had played four previous games this season which all ended in draws, but Atleticos breakthrough kept Barcelona from the semifinals for the first time in seven seasons. "We just have to keep working hard and stay calm because we still havent won anything," said Atletico coach Diego Simeone, whose team will face either crosstown rival Real Madrid, Chelsea, or Bayern Munich in a two-legged semifinal. Bayern beat Manchester United 3-1 on Wednesday to eliminate the English champions 4-2 overall. Adrian replaced Costa after Atleticos star striker failed to recover from a hamstring injury and the little-used forward immediately made a mark by rocketing a shot off the near post just before the opening goal. Adrian eventually headed the ball back across the area for Koke to score from close range to the delight of the capacity crowd. Atletico, feeding off the roar of its home supporters, had Barcelona consistently on the back foot early on and Villa found the post in the 11th-minute. Barcelona controlled possession but Atletico was dangerous on the counter as Villa fired on the run over goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto but off the crossbar -- the teaams third touch of the woodwork. Aaron Ramsey Jersey. Messi had Barcelonas lone scoring chances of the first half as he headed Dani Alves cross past the near post in the 13th before firing wide past the opposite post near the break after Neymars quick footwork created the chance inside the area. Barcelona took control from the restart as Atletico hung back, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois doing well to poke the ball away at Messis feet as he darted through the area and then recover in time to ensure the ball was deflected over goal in the ensuing scramble. "There was a big difference between one team and another early on. We couldnt string together four or five passes like we needed to," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. "If we had managed to equalize we might have been able to play the game we wanted." Adrian was taken off to a rousing ovation in the 61st and replaced by Diego Ribas, who scored Atleticos goal in the 1-1 draw in the first leg. Minutes later, Pinto was diving to save from the Brazilian on a counterattack before Atleticos penalty appeals were waved off when Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano tripped up Villa inside the area. Villa and Gabi Fernandez led another counter in the 70th, only for Pinto to kick out Gabis weak shot. Barcelona failed to muster up anything more and Pinto had to make a late save on Villa to keep it close, but the Catalans could not break through the hosts tight defence. "I thought we deserved the draw," Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez said, despite his team managing just five attempts on goal to Atleticos nine. "The game got away from us." After walking off the pitch to loud cheers, the Atletico players re-emerged again to celebrate a memorable victory with the nearly 50,000 fans. "The five games (between Atletico and Barcelona this season) all turned out nearly the same way, there werent any major differences except there was a clear winner this time," Martino said.
