RIO DE JANEIRO -- Golf formally returned to the Olympics on Thursday, on a course that saw its construction threatened by lawsuits aimed at protecting the nature preserve on which it was built. The first official Olympic golf shot in 112 years was struck by Brazils Adilson da Silva to open the round, and plenty of his countrymen were on the course as fans. It came about a year after the last of the hassles that included environmental lawsuits, land ownership disputes and doubts it even needed to be built in the first place. The course is good, said Canadas Graham Delaet, who shot 66 and is tied for second, three shots back of early leader Marcus Fraser of Australia. I think it exceeded everyones expectations.Plenty of native wildlife has remained on the course even after construction, including capybara (a large rodent), caiman (small crocodile) and corujas (burrowing owls). The animals, the owls especially, were particularly visible in the practice rounds earlier this week, when there were considerably fewer people on the course.Fans being on the course Thursday may have sent some of the animals seeking cover.I imagine people in Brazil think it is funny that we go oogling over something that is a little more normal to them, said U.S. golfer Matt Kuchar, who shot 69 and finished the day tied for 11th in the 60-man field, six shots off Frasers pace.Games organizers and city officials have consistently defended the construction of the course, which they hope will spark growth of the game in Brazil. The course also features newly built luxury apartments, which further raised the ire of those groups who objected to the construction in the first place.Plans call for the course to be public for at least 20 years. Rio has a small number of private golf clubs as well. The course took three years to build, and problems werent limited to the courtrooms. Gil Hanse, the American who designed the course, complained early in the project he wasnt getting paid by the developer and hinted at pulling out. Riley Ridley Womens Jersey . JOHNS, N. William Perry Bears Jersey . The formidable trio of Canadian receivers -- individually known as Chris Getzlaf, Rob Bagg and Andy Fantuz -- will share the field at Mosaic Stadium one more time on Sunday. http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Ha-Ha-Clinton-Dix-Jersey/ . -- Canadian Andrew Wiggins got the ball on the wing, made a nifty spin move and then let go with a soft floater from about 10 feet that swished through the net in Allen Fieldhouse. Dick Butkus Jersey . The 18th player to shoot 60 on the tour, Jamieson settled for par on the final hole when his 15-foot birdie chip grazed the edge of the hole and stayed out. After opening with rounds of 66 and 73 to make the cut by a stroke, he had 11 birdies in the bogey-free round. Dan Hampton Jersey .J. -- Seven games into a disappointing season, New York Giants defensive catalyst Jason Pierre-Paul is getting the feeling hes back. SALT LAKE CITY -- Utahs eighth false start penalty of the first half brought out boos from its homecoming crowd. Luckily for the Utes, a second-half rally was enough to avoid spoiling the occasion.Quarterback Troy Williams ran for two touchdowns and threw another, helping No. 24 Utah come back to beat Arizona 36-23 on Saturday night.Utah (5-1, 2-1) trailed 14-12 at halftime after committing 11 first-half penalties, including all those false starts. Arizona (2-4, 0-3) scored on the first snap of the game when Brandon Dawkins connected with Shun Brown for a 75-yard TD pass, taking advantage of blown coverage that left Brown completely uncovered. Were a pretty decent football team if we would stop some of the self-inflicted stuff, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. We did some things to create tough situations for us that weve got to get fixed. We had far too many penalties tonight. The Utes scored 26 straight points after falling behind 14-3. Williams got both of his running TDs in the second half and had 245 yards passing for the game. Armand Shyne also ran for a TD in the third quarter, while the defense tightened up and forced two second-half turnovers and allowed just nine points. Shyne finished with 101 yards on 19 carries. The Utes moved into a tie atop the Pac-12 South with Colorado. They ended a four-game losing streak to Arizona. After beating Arizonas Rich Rodriguez, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has defeated every active Pac-12 coach since joining the conference in 2011. Whittingham also got his 100th career victory.THE TAKEAWAYArizona: The Wildcats allowed more than 400 yards for the fifth consecutive game. Fans will be happy to have Dawkins back, but Arizona was held to 127 yards rushing, including just 78 from players other than Dawkins. The sophomore quarterback threw for 243 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and also ran for a score. Freshman Khalil Tate finished the game for the second consecutive week.I dont think our defense wore down, Arizona linebacker Michael Barton said. They just kept attacking and we just tried to fight as best we could.dddddddddddd. We had a lot of new guys in there today, guys who hadnt played any snaps before today.Utah: USCs win over Colorado helped the Utes move into a tie for first, but they cant feel great about it. The offense finished with fine statistics, but most of the positives came in the second half against a team that entered the game ranked No. 104 in the nation in total defense. The defense allowed a season-high 475 yards. We had a few big plays made on us, but we bounced back every time they happened, Utah safety Marcus Williams said. We never put our heads down. We just kept grinding through the game and we just got this win.QUOTABLEWhat do you want me to do, quit? Rodriguez said when asked about keeping the morale high. Were just going to go down here and hitchhike home and go feel sorry for ourselves and just cancel the season. Is that what you expect? You want those coaches and players in there to quit? Just because we lose a game or two? Cmon, these guys are going to fight.POLL IMPLICATIONSUtah is unlikely to get a whole lot of credit after squeaking past a 2-4 team thats 0-3 in the Pac-12. Any significant jump is likely due to losses by No. 15 Stanford, No. 17 North Carolina and No. 21 Colorado.INJURY UPDATEBoth teams entered the game with several injuries to significant players. Dawkins started for Arizona after leaving last game with a rib injury, but running back Nick Wilson (ankle) did not play.Utah was without running backs Zack Moss and Troy McCormick, starting receiver Tim Patrick and top two centers J.J. Dielman and Lo Falemaka. Shyne was carried off the field by teammates after suffering a left leg injury on a fourth-quarter run. Whittingham said the injury could be season-ending.UP NEXTArizona: The Wildcats host USC in Pac-12 South action on October 15.Utah: The Utes travel to face former defensive coordinator Gary Andersen and his Oregon State Beavers on October 15.
