HOUSTON -- Brock Osweiler doesnt have much experience as an NFL starter. The good news for the Houston Texans is that their inconsistent quarterback does have a history with the San Diego Chargers, who visit Houston on Sunday.Osweiler won twice last season against the Chargers when he played for Denver. He believes his familiarity with San Diego (4-6) will help him this week despite his move to a new team. The one thing it allows me to do is ... I know their personnel a little bit, Osweiler said. I know what (defensive coordinator John) Pagano wants to do schematically. Obviously, Im expecting some game plan adjustments that maybe I havent seen before, but certainly I feel like San Diego is more of a common opponent in my eyes.Osweiler and the Texans look to rebound this week after yet another road loss against Oakland in Mexico City. The Texans (6-4) hope to improve to 6-0 at home on Sunday and hold onto first place in the AFC South when they host a San Diego team which has lost two of three and is coming off its bye .Though the Texans werent able to outlast Oakland , coach Bill OBrien believes Osweiler is improving and that hell get better as he gets more experience in Houstons system. He has thrown 12 touchdown passes with 10 interceptions, but has been much better at home where hes had eight TD tosses. Our chemistry is growing with every single day we spend together and obviously my knowledge of the offense is getting better and better each week, Osweiler said.Chargers coach Mike McCoy has a history with Osweiler . He was Denvers offensive coordinator when Osweiler was drafted in 2012 and the coach is impressed with the progress hes made this season.I know the attention to detail, the way he prepares, McCoy said. Hes going to be the biggest critic of himself, but a talented player. The more you play with your teammates, the more you play in your system ... the more comfortable you are going to feel the better you are going to play as time goes on, and that showed on Monday night. Some things to know about Houstons first meeting against San Diego since 2013.NOT THAT WATT: There will be a Watt on the field in Houston, but it wont be Texans injured superstar J.J. Watt. It will be his brother Derek Watt , a rookie sixth-round pick of the Chargers this season. Quarterback Philip Rivers said hes added a new dimension to their offense.Hes kind of a true fullback that was havent really had in a handful of years, Rivers said. Weve used our tight ends kind of in that role. He obviously plays on special teams as well, he catches the ball well and hes good as a fullback. Hes been a good addition for us.CLOWNEYS CONTRIBUTION: Houston defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is having the best season of his three-year career and is tied for second in the NFL with a career-high 12 tackles for losses. The improvement of the top overall pick in the 2014 draft has helped Houston deal with the loss of Watt.Hes a very talented player, McCoy said. Hes a player that you have to make sure you know where he is every play, because he is a special player that can change a game in a hurry.RECORD WATCH: With 109 career touchdown catches, San Diegos Antonio Gates needs two to tie Tony Gonzalez for the NFL record for a tight end. Gates has five TD catches this year. He has yet to have a two-touchdown game. Gates has caught 82 career scoring passes from Rivers, the most in NFL history between a quarterback and a tight end.EXTRA TIME: This is the second week in a row Houston will meet a team coming off its bye. Coach Bill OBrien said his coaching staff had to work more this week and last to even the field since their opponents had more time to get ready.Theyve already been preparing for you for three or four days or whatever it is, OBrien said. We have a lot of catching up to do ... Im not complaining about that. Its just its definitely something that we have to put in extra time to try to catch up to their preparation time for us.GORDONS WORK: San Diego running back Melvin Gordon looks to continue his big season. Hes the NFLs fourth-leading rusher with 838 yards, needing 162 more for his first 1,000-yard season and the 20th in franchise history. The Chargers last 1,000-yard rusher was Ryan Mathews with 1,255 in 2013. Gordon ran for a career-high 196 yards in a victory against Tennessee three weeks ago. He has three 100-yard games and nine rushing touchdowns this season, compared to no 100-yard games and no touchdowns during his miserable rookie season, when he was benched twice for fumbling and then injured his left knee, forcing him to miss the final two games and leading to offseason surgery.---AP Sports Writer Bernie Wilson contributed to this report.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Nike NFL Jerseys Cheap .C. That quickly turned a 33-30 halftime deficit into a double-digit lead against the cold-shooting Spartans (3-3).We were able to get stops and we were able to get some transition buckets, Baylor coach Scott Drew said. And when were able get in transition with some easy ones, that loosens things up.The Bears did a lot of things well. They controlled the boards. They had 24 assists on 30 baskets. They scored 19 points off turnovers. The Spartans just werent able to mount much of a pushback. They went 7 minutes between baskets spanning halftime as Baylor made its push, while the Spartans thin front line was no match for the 7-foot Lual-Acuil and 6-10 Motley. We were bigger than them in the paint and we think were tougher, Motley said, so we just used that to our advantage.Freshman Miles Bridges scored 15 points for the Spartans, who shot 39 percent after halftime -- including 1 for 10 on 3-pointers -- in a demanding opening month of the schedule that has them crisscrossing the country. We were moving the ball and really playing well I thought through the first half, and we quit doing that, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. I just think we looked awfully tired. I can accept that thats my fault, not theirs.BIG PICTUREBaylor: In their first two games in the Bahamas, the Bears have notched a tough win against VCU and now a rout against the Spartans in the span of 24 hours -- about as good of a startt as Drew couldve hoped to see.dddddddddddd.Michigan State: The concerns about the Spartans injury-depleted front line showed up in a big way in this one. Motley went just about anywhere he wanted in the first half, while Lual-Acuil led Baylors effort on the boards. Izzo said Wednesday there would be some growing pains while this group sorted things out -- and this performance illustrated it perfectly.POLL IMPLICATIONSThe Bears vaulted into this weeks AP Top 25 after beating then-No. 4 Oregon last week and could be ready to climb after beating VCU and Michigan State, depending on their finish Friday. As for the Spartans, theyve slid from their No. 12 preseason perch and could be set to fall all the way out despite -- or maybe because of -- that schedule.IZZOS APOLOGYMichigan State has already lost to Arizona in Hawaii and Kentucky in New York. The Spartans travel to Duke next week in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.Izzo said he did a terrible job putting together a schedule that has left little time to practice and try to develop his team.I actually apologized to my team, he said. And yet, Ive always played a tough schedule. ... You know what? You can take it as an excuse, you can take it as the truth, I dont give a damn. Im telling you what I did. This aint on them. Its on me.UPFRONT SIZEWith Michigan State down two big men because of injuries, Lual-Acuil, Ishmail Wainright (eight rebounds) and Motley helped the Bears control the inside. Baylor outrebounded Michigan State 36-29 and held it to three offensive boards while scoring 44 points in the paint.UP NEXTBaylor: The Bears will play No. 10 Louisville, which beat Wichita State later Thursday, in Fridays championship game.Michigan State: The Spartans will play Wichita State in Fridays third-place game.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap---More AP college basketball at http://collegebasketball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
