October has been a trying month for the Michigan State womens soccer team. A five-game losing streak that began as the calendar flipped ensured it would be the month in which the season ended for the Spartans, hopes of a winning record and postseason aspirations extinguished together.And that was before defending national champion Penn State arrived for the home finale.So if Jamie Cheslik had let up just a little bit, it might have been understandable. Not given up or mailed it in, mind you, just lifted her foot imperceptibly off the accelerator as a wearying season neared its conclusion for the junior who scored two goals in Michigan States first 16 games.It is hard to chase a ball for 90 minutes when it so rarely seems to bounce your way.Instead, Cheslik ran headlong toward redemption, the tip of the spear for a team that made the most of its final game in East Lansing. Doubling her season total in the span of an afternoon, Cheslik scored twice and assisted on Michigan States other goal in a 3-1 win against a ranked opponent.The Spartans may not win the season, but in beating the Nittany Lions, Cheslik won the week. She is espnWs national soccer player of the week.Cheslik played a role in setting up the opening goal, which in turn gave the Spartans their first lead in regulation since Sept. 11. Her pass put teammate Madison Duncan in open space on the right side, space Duncan then used to lift a cross that Morgan McKerchie finished at the far post.There was still more work to do on what proved to be the clincher just before halftime. Having played the entire first half, not always a given for forwards with the liberal substitution rules in college soccer, she was just outside of her own 18-yard box when she headed on a clearance following a Penn State free kick. She then turned and sprinted the length of the field, where she ran onto a pass from Brittany Tanner at the edge of the other 18-yard box and scored with the aid of a deflection.Gassed at the end of a long run near the end of a long half, it would have been easy to lift such a shot high or wide, never forcing the defender to commit enough to cause the deflection.And still it wasnt time to coast. Penn State pulled within a goal late in the second half and spent the games final frantic minutes entrenched in Michigan States end of the field in search of a tie. But with less than a minute to play, and still without any breather on the bench, Cheslik intercepted a Nittany Lions pass deep in her own end, took one big touch into open space and sprinted about 70 yards. With two defenders at her heels, she kept her wits enough to stay with a shot that the Penn State goalkeeper initially blocked and steered the rebound into the open net.Then, and only then, did she slow to a jog as she waited for her teammates to arrive and celebrate.Michigan State had beaten Penn State just twice in the past 21 meetings.
