PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews is expected to miss the next few weeks of training camp, head coach Doug Pederson said Monday.Matthews injured his knee during Fridays practice session. Rookie cornerback Jalen Mills hit Matthews low, one of several incidents that led veteran offensive players to complain. Tight end Zach Ertz, who was tested for a concussion after a hit a few plays before Matthews injury, spoke out about the hits.It needs to be addressed, Ertz said, but it is what it is. Its live football, so if that situation [happens] in a game, weve got to get ready for it. But obviously, with Jordan and I getting hurt today, you dont want to see that.Pederson has defended the amount of contact in his practices, saying that football is a contact sport and hitting is the only way to prepare properly. But injuries have started to add up, with starting linebacker Mychal Kendricks leaving the field during Mondays practice.Left tackle Jason Peters (quadriceps), safety Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring) and rookie running back Wendell Smallwood (quadriceps) have missed the past several days of practice. Matthews, 24, was the Eagles leading receiver in 2015 with 997 yards on 85 receptions. In his absence, Josh Huff has taken a lot of first-team reps in the slot. Veteran Rueben Randle is also a likely candidate to replace Matthews.Matthews will miss the Eagles preseason opener Thursday night against Tampa Bay. He will likely miss their Aug. 18 game against Pittsburgh. Pederson said he hoped to have Matthews back in time for the Eagles third preseason game, Aug. 17 at Indianapolis. PORTLAND, Ore. -- It seems like everything is going right for the Portland Thorns heading into the National Womens Soccer League playoffs. The Thorns finished out the regular season with a four-game winning streak and claimed the NWSL Shield for the team with the best record. They also clinched home-field advantage for the first time. They face the Western New York Flash in a semifinal game Sunday.Forward Christine Sinclair credited first-year coach Mark Parsons. The Thorns (12-3-5) always had talent, she said, but that didnt always translate into wins. The difference is this year were a team from the top down, Sinclair said. I thought when Mark came on board it changed a lot. He stressed being a team -- you know, hanging out outside of soccer practice -- and I think youre starting to see that on the field. Were willing to do anything for each other.Sinclair also recognized the players who were with the team all season while their teammates were in and out in preparation for the Olympics. Sinclair won the bronze medal in Rio with the Canadian national team. The Thorns roster also includes U.S. Olympians Tobin Heath, Lindsey Horan, Meghan Klingenberg, Allie Long and alternate Emily Sonnett. Additionally, Amandine Henry played for France in Brazil. In a pre-match conference call Thursday, Klingenberg unexpectedly took over to sing Happy Birthday, even though it was no ones birthday, and Sinclair dissolved into giggles. Parsons deadpanned: I have no way to explain.Former Thorns coach Paul Riley took over the Flash in February. He said hard work led his young team to the playoffs. We didnt set any goals. Our goal wasnt to make the playoffs, our goal wasnt to make the final. Our goal was to win the first game oof the season, Riley said.dddddddddddd Thats really the way weve approached every game. Weve set no goals for the group, we just wanted each player to get a little bit better each game and believe in the process -- and things will happen if we do everything right to the best of our abilities. The atmosphere at Providence Park could be hostile to the visitors. The Thorns boast the best home attendance in the league with an average of 16,945 fans per game this season. While Portland is the third team in league history to allow an average of less than one goal a game over the course of the season, the Flash (9-6-5) are just the third team to average at least two goals a game. The Flash are paced by league Golden Boot winner Lynn Williams with 11 goals and five assists. The Chicago Red Stars (9-5-6) play the Washington Spirit (12-5-3) in the other semifinal match on Friday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex. Neither team has ever played for the league championship. The two teams met just last weekend with the Red Stars earning the No. 3 seed in the playoffs with a 3-1 victory. It was the Spirits second straight lost and denied the team the NWSL Shield. The goal is to win a championship, Spirit coach Jim Gabarra said. If you dont make the playoffs youre obviously not going to win the championship. If you make the playoffs and win the Shield and you dont win a championship then you still havent achieved your ultimate goal.Chicago finished the season tied with the Seattle Reign with eight total shutouts. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher had six clean sheets.FC Kansas City won the 2015 NWSL title. ' ' '
SAN FRANCISCO -- Two teams tail-spinning into dangerous territory in the National League playoff picture look to turn things around while adding to the others misery when the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants open a four-game series Thursday night. The pitching matchup in the opener has an October feel to it: Jacob deGrom vs. Madison Bumgarner. But truth be told, neither New York nor San Francisco figures to be playing much fall baseball the way their summers have been going. The Mets (60-60) arrive in San Francisco having lost two of three at Arizona to open a 10-game trip. And now comes the tough part: four at San Francisco (66-54) and three at St. Louis (64-56), two of the four teams the Mets are chasing in the wild-card race. The race has gone more backward than forward for both the Mets and the Giants in recent weeks.Having lost seven of 10 against the Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres -- the bottom two teams in the NL West -- the Mets are just 13-18 since the All-Star break, the fourth-worst record in the NL.They are hoping deGrom (7-5, 2.30 ERA) can help get things headed back in the right direction. The right-hander has been terrific in his past nine starts. If you throw out his only loss in that stretch -- when he was roughed up for five runs in 3 2/3 innings at Miami on July 23 -- he has allowed just five runs in 56 2/3 innings, an 0.79 ERA.However, he has only four wins to show for those games, an indication of just how bad the Mets have been of late. They are planning to have shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (Thursday) and Yoenis Cespedes (Friday) back for the San Francisco series, which might help. Cabrera has been sidelined since Aug. 1 with a strained left patellar tendon, while Cespedes has placed out since Aug. 4 due to a strained right quadriceps.San Francisco, meanwhile, fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Wednesday, capping a three-game series sweep. The Giants have lost five of six on their current 10-game homestand. They have been even worse than the Mets since the All-Star break, going 9-21, the worst record in baseball.Along the way, the Giants have dropped out of first place in the NL West after holding the top spot for 93 consecutive days. They will begin play Thursday trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by 1 1/2 games in the division. Were taking some blows right now, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said after the Wednesday loss. But its a tough club. Its a resilient club. They came out and did some good things (Wednesday). Were creating some good chances and opportunities. The Giants will begin the series with their ace on the mound. Bumgarner (11-7, 2.11 ERA) has never lost to the Mets in his career, having gone 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in five starts. In fact, Bumgarner hasnt even allowed a run to the Mets since Sept. 13, 2013. He is the only pitcher with at least two starts against the Mets not to have given up a run against them over the past three seasons.Interestingly, both the Mets and Giants already are planning ahead for a big series next week, when New York visits St. Louis and San Francisco goes to Dodger Stadium. Both managers are of the same mindset with a day off Monday. Each indicated Wednesday he is considering skipping his fifth starter (the Mets Jonathon Niese and Giants Matt Cain) so that deGrom and Bumgarner can begin that series as well.Well have to see what happens (Thursday) night, Mets manager Terry Collins said of deGroms pitch count. BATON ROUGE, La. -- Jalen Hurts broke loose for a 21-yard touchdown run to break a scoreless tie early in the fourth quarter, and No. 1 Alabamas defense thoroughly stifled Leonard Fournette and LSU in a 10-0 victory over the No. 13 Tigers on Saturday night. The Crimson Tide (9-0, 6-0) won for the sixth straight time against LSU (5-3, 3-2) and remained alone in first place in the SEC West -- a game ahead of Auburn.Hurts, a freshman who has exceeded expectations by establishing himself as one of the most dynamic, explosive players in college football, was the games leading rusher with 114 yards on 20 carries. He also completed 10 of 19 passes for 107 yards.LSU had had its share of big plays -- but all on defense, forcing Hurts into an early interception and late fumble. But LSUs offense could not capitalize against menacing defensive end Jonathan Allen and the rest of Alabamas suffocating defense. The Tigers finished with just 125 total yards. Fournette, whose 2015 Heisman Trophy hopes faded when he was held to 31 yards on 19 carries in Tuscaloosa last year, had 35 yards on 17 carries. One game after touchdown runs of 78, 76 and 59 yards against Mississippi, Fournettes longest run against the Crimson Tide was 9 yards.LSUs Danny Etling completed 11 of 24 passes for 92 yards and also was intercepted once in the fourth quarter, leading to a late Alabama field goal. Alabama had five sacks, one more than LSUs offense had allowed in any other game this season. Allen, linebackers Rashaan Evans and Ryan Anderson; and end Dalvin Tomlinson each sacked Etling, while Rueben Foster and Tim Williams combined on a sack. Both teams entered the game with highly respected, play-making defenses and those units dictated the play most of the game, which was scoreless through three quarters.LSU intercepted Hurts pass on the games opening possession, but could not move the ball and had to settle for a field goal try, which was partially blocked by Alabamas Ronnie Harrison.Alabama did not drive into field goal range until about 6 minutes remained in the second quarter, but Adam Griffiths kick hooked wide left.At the end of the first half, a defensive stand by LSU deep in Alabama territory got the Tigers the ball back at the Crimson Tide 47, but Alabamas defense did not allow LSU to approach field goal range. The Tide appeared to be on the brink of the games first points after Hurts lofted a pin-point, play-action pass deep down the middle of the field to ArDarius Stewart for a 52-yard gain to the LSU 8, but four plays later, LSU linebacker Duke Riley and end Arden Key dropped Hurts for a 5-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1.The Tigers defense came up big yet again when end Frank Heron sacked and stripped Hurts, and Key recovered on the Alabama 42. But the LSU offense only went backward, hurt by a delay-of-game and intentional grounding penalties.THE TAKEAWAYAlabama: LSU coach Ed Orgeron said earlier this week that Alabama might have the best defense in college football history, and he might be right.LSU: As much as LSU has tried open up its offense by changing formations and passing more, Etling didnt have the poise, or the blocking to succeed against Alabama. LSUs running game suffered because of the Tigers inability to throw.POLL IMPLICATIONSAlabama: Alabama continues to strengthen its case as the best team in the nation.LSU: The Tigers might not tumble out of the Top 25 because of how close it played the nations top team, but it will fall.UP NEXTAlabama: The Tide hosts Mississippi State next Saturday.LSU: The Tigers travel to meet Arkansas next weekend. TROON, Scotland -- Like many golf fans around the world, Jack Nicklaus was riveted by the final round of The Open on Sunday. And he believes the play of winner Henrik Stenson and runner-up Phil Mickelson surpassed that of his famed encounter with Tom Watson known as the Duel in the Sun.Our final round was really good, Nicklaus wrote on Facebook,?but theirs was even better.Stenson matched a major championship record by shooting a 63, becoming only the second player to do so in the final round and win.Mickelson, a five-time major champion who won the 2013 Open, stayed mostly shot for shot with Stenson until the end, his bogey-free 65 not enough.I was fortunate to watch every second of todays final round of the Open Championship, and I thought it was fantastic, Nicklaus wrote. Phil Mickelson played one of the best rounds I have ever seen played in The Open and Henrik Stenson just played better -- he played one of the greatest rounds I have ever seen.Stenson, 40, became the first male Swedish golfer to win a major championship and moved to No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking.Mickelson, 46, was bidding to become the fourth-oldest major winner and join Nick Faldo and Lee Trevino with six majors. His score of 267 was 11 strokes better than third-place J.B. Holmes?and?would have won 140 of the 145 Opens played.Phil certainly has nothing to be ashamed of because he played wonderfully, Nicklaus wrote. Henrik played well from the beginnning to end.dddddddddddd He drove the ball well; his iron game was great; his short game was wonderful; and his putting was great. Henrik was simply terrific. To win your first major championship is something special in and of itself, but to do in the fashion Henrik did it in, makes for something very special and incredibly memorable. Im proud of and happy for Henrik.Nicklaus, 76, won The Open three times as part of his 18 major championships. But one of the more memorable tournaments was his 1977 loss to Watson at Turnberry, about 20 miles south of Royal Troon.Watson and Nicklaus had the same score through 54 holes, shooting the same score each round -- including third-round 65s.Grouped again for the final round, Watson shot 65 to Nicklaus 66 in what is considered one of the sports epic showdowns. Nicklaus finished 10 strokes ahead of Hubert Green, who famously quipped afterward: I won the golf tournament. I dont know what game those other guys were playing.Wrote Nicklaus on Sunday: Some in the media have already tried to compare todays final round to 1977 at Turnberry, with Tom Watson and me in what they called the Duel in the Sun. I thought we played great and had a wonderful match. On that day, Tom got me, 65-66. Our final round was really good, but theirs was even better. What a great match today. ' ' '
BARCELONA, Spain -- Pep Guardiolas decision to leave Sergio Aguero out of his Manchester City starting lineup Wednesday backfired badly in a 4-0 loss at Barcelona in the Champions League.Premier League-leading City failed to fill the void created by the absence of its top scorer. Barcelona capitalized and seized its opportunities, with Lionel Messi scoring three goals and setting up Neymar for another. The loss at Camp Nou against Guardiolas former team exposed two of the managers most important decisions as being off the mark.Agueros exclusion was tactical. But another big factor in the loss will revive doubts about getting rid of England goalkeeper Joe Hart.Despite scoring five goals in six Premier League matches and another six goals in Champions League qualifying and group phase matches this season, Aguero watched from the dugout as Barcelona took control of Group C with a commanding victory.Guardiola instead resorted to a formation he used often at Barcelona, playing without a clear striker and instead aligning Kevin De Bruyne up front as a false 9 with wingers Manuel Nolito Agudo and Raheem Sterling. It was my decision. I wanted more midfielders, said Guardiola, confirming that Aguero was not troubled by any lingering injuries from recent international duty.De Bruyne was the only City player to occasionally threaten Barcelonas goal. His best opportunity came late with Barcelona already three goals clear, but goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen did well to stop him one-on-one.Another issue highlighted in Citys fourth consecutive game without a win was the poor form of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.Bravo, who Guardiola pushed City to sign from Barcelona at the start of the season, was sent off in the 53rd minute after back-to-back errors. Bravo first flubbed a pass right to Barcelonas Luis Suarez and then used his hands to block his shot while outside the box, earning a red card.Guardiola acknowledged that the mistake, which occurred when his team was trailing by a goal, crushed any chances of a comeback. Even so, he defended his goalkeeper. He knows what he did, Guardiola said. He has a lot of experience. He has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for the past 10 years. I have no doubts in him. Wholesale NCAA Jerseys . We were a bit shell shocked in that first half. They put us under pressure leading into half time but it wass a good fight back from us.ddddddddddddIm glad weve got the win and it has given us the experience. Its also given us a few selection headaches leading in to naming the side for Saturday, which is good to have.Sarah Riordan had a great game at fullback and she is putting pressure on that position, Mollie Gray had a great game and got us across the advantage line, and Chloe Leaupepe played well and kicked the final penalty goal to get us the win.The Wallaroos, who have never beaten New Zealand, face the Black Ferns at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday. The teams then play a second Test at QBE Stadium in Albany the following Wednesday. ' ' '
HOUSTON -- The moment he heard the question, Draymond Green was ready. He didnt hide from it. He answered with honesty and reflection.Sunday morning, Green, the power forward for Team USA and the Golden State Warriors, published a picture of his penis on Snapchat and took it down after about 10 minutes. The picture wasnt meant for everybody, but by pushing the wrong button, everybody could see it.Green apologized and said he hopes this will mature him as a man and basketball player. This summer, Green has done plenty of apologizing. In June, he apologized for being suspended for Game 5 of the NBA Finals for punching LeBron James in the groin, an act that came one series after Green was shown kicking Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams in the groin during the Western Conference finals.Green apologized again earlier this month, for allegedly slapping a Michigan State football player, forcing Green to reach a plea deal to avoid jail time. And just when things were getting quiet, Green finds himself involved in another fiasco, this time on social media. He wasnt arrested. Hes not under any investigation. Hes not facing another suspension. But he made another mistake. After he took the inappropriate picture down, Green posted on Twitter that he was hacked:Hacked..... Cant win right now- Draymond Green (@Money23Green) July 31, 2016However, when Green spoke with reporters Sunday afternoon after Team USAs practice in Houston, he didnt mention anything about his account being hacked, just about putting this latest misstep into perspective.?Theres so many things going on in my world for me to sit and complain [that] I cant catch a break, Green said. For me to sit here [and say] I cant catch a break [for getting] suspended for a game in the Finals or I cant catch a break for this situation, Im living my dreams, Im playing in the Olympics. To say I cant catch a break, I think thats disrespectful for everybody. How many people get to live their dreams? Im not going to sit here and throw myself a pity party and say I cant catch a break. Im fine. I get to joke around with these guys all day and get to do what I love for my country. Im fine. Im fine.Green burst onto the scene as the underdog, undersized power forward with a physical, loud, skillful brand of basketball that is a joy to watch. But his off-the-court issues are slowly starting to precede his reputation as an NBA All-Star and champion.Being suspended is one thing. A dust-up at a bar is another. Now this.I didnt get a call [about the Snapchat post]. I figured it out pretty quick, he said. In this world, quick aint quick enough. Once its out, its out. I thought I reacted pretty quick. I saw those screen shots and quick aint quick enough in this world.Green is an intelligent person. Hes socially aware of whats going on; he was one of several players to receive questions about the Black Lives Matter movement during Sundays media session. So Green is not just some basketball player simply counting his checks. The world means something to him and he presents himself as wanting to make a difference.Yet mistakes will occur.Scrutiny in everything he does comes to the forefront and he doesnt hide from it.This is what I asked for, though, Green said. I asked to be in this position; I worked to be in this position, and it comes with the territory.I truly believe we all go through points in our life that help propel us to the next level. Im at the stage right now where all this stuff will help propel me to the next level as a basketball player, but more importantly as a man. I dont live my life with regrets. I apologize for the situation. Its clearly not what I was trying to do. At the end of the day you have certain situations in your life that just help push you forward, and you have to use them the right way. In recent times South Africa has presented some of the toughest conditions for batsmen: the pitches usually have a fair covering of grass, and offer plenty of seam movement and bounce for fast bowlers. In ODIs, though, much of this changes: the grass is shaved off, but the pitches still retain true bounce, making them excellent batting surfaces on which you can hit through the line of the ball without worrying about seam movement or uneven bounce. That has been in evidence in the ongoing South Africa-Australia ODI series, with both teams, and especially the home side, making huge scores: Australias 294 in the first game was chased down with more than 13 overs to spare, while South Africa made 361 in the second, and successfully chased 371 in the third. In three matches the average run rate has been 6.99, the second highest so far in any ODI series of two or more matches. (The highest is 7.15, in the England-New Zealand series last year.) A part of the reason could be the absence of Australias top bowlers for this series, but that doesnt explain the economy rates of some of the top bowlers who are playing in this series - Dale Steyns is 7.33, Kagiso Rabadas 6.66, and Adam Zampas 7.52.In the last five years, the scoring rates in South Africa have gone up significantly, to 5.66. The only host country with a higher run rate - among countries that have hosted 25-plus ODIs since the start of 2012 - is India, where the rate is 5.70. During this period, there have been eight totals in excess of 350, which is the joint highest, along with India. Seven of those have come in the last couple of years, which indicates how batting-friendly conditions have been in South Africa recently.South Africa wasnt always such a great country for ODI batting, though. In the period between 2005 and 2011, the run rate here was 5.10, which was lower than those in India, New Zealand, Pakistan, England and Australia. In the last few years, though, batsmen have relished ODI conditions in South Africa as much as they have probably disliked them in Tests. That is most apparent in the opening partnerships: in Tests the average opening stand since the start of 2012 is 31.37, which is lower than the average in all countries except Sri Lanka; in ODIs, the average is 42.53, whichh is second highest among all countries, after Indias 44.dddddddddddd1. The run rate in opening stands has been 5.42, which is higher than in all countries except Sri Lanka and New Zealand. In Tests the early overs with the new ball are usually a period when bowlers inflict plenty of damage in South Africa. That doesnt seem to be the case in ODIs, where the average runs per wicket in the first 15 overs is 39.19, which is better than the average in all countries except India. The run rate is only 4.83 - Sri Lanka, New Zealand and England have all done better - but that picks up in the middle overs, to 5.69, which is the highest among all teams. On the truer pitches of South Africa, these overs represent the best scoring opportunities for the batting teams, unlike in the subcontinent, where pitches often slow up and make it difficult for batsmen to force the pace. The last ten havent been as prolific, relatively, but the middle overs have ensured the overall run rate stays extremely high. In the ongoing South Africa-Australia series, the two teams have been going at 6.53 in the middle overs. These have been tough times for bowlers in South Africa, but some of them have risen to the challenge, taken wickets and kept the runs in check. South Africa have a 23-12 win-loss record at home during this period, and while the batsmen have scored a bucketful of runs, the bowlers have perhaps been the bigger heroes, restricting opposition line-ups in batsman-friendly conditions.Dale Steyn has had a wretched series against Australia so far, conceding 198 runs in 27 overs (economy rate 7.33), but he has a stellar record in home ODIs during this period, taking 36 wickets in 22 games at an economy rate of 4.51. In all but six of those matches he has gone at under 5.50 an over. Imran Tahir has been superb in the middle overs, going at 4.87 per over while taking 19 wickets at 28.63. All the eight top wicket-takers during this period have strike rates of fewer than 33 balls per wicket, and have gone at less than 5.50 per over. Those numbers have had a huge role to play in South Africas outstanding home record over the last five years. ' ' '

Then there were two races to go in the NASCAR Sprint Cup season. I hope its been profitable, fun and spiritually fulfilling. Im going to assume that it was. Before we move on, lets take a look back at Texas. Hey, look who was all over the top of the DraftKings points chart! Three of the top four and four of the top seven points earners drove a Gibbs -- or a Gibbs-affiliated -- machine.Carl Edwards won the race, being out front when the race was shortened due to rain, after it had been delayed several hours due to rain. But he just finished third in fantasy points, behind Joey Logano, who dominated with 178 laps led, and Martin Truex Jr., with another top-notch race on a 1.5-mile track.Hopefully you got on board with my top midvalue pick in Kasey Kahne, who started 31st and finished eighth. He didnt lead a lap or register a fastest lap, but that day was good for 59 points, fifth-best in the field. This week, we make a visit to Phoenix, a flat one-mile track that we have already visited this season, but way back in March.Unlike other short tracks, the laps here are somewhat limited, the race is scheduled for 312 laps, as opposed to a mile-long track like Dover, where theyll run 400. So you wouldnt expect to see big numbers for laps led here, and thats true to a point, but more on that in a minute. The other point to focus on is that passing is tough at the track, and the rear of the field will be nearly a lap down when the race begins. Therefore, youll want to grab some of the starters in the front of the field for your own benefit.Four of the top five average scoring starting positions at Phoenix are one, two, three and four. Earlier this season, Gibbs cars started 1-2-3, and they finished 2-3-4.Who was one, you might ask?Im starting my team with...This is the easiest move Ill make all year, but Kevin Harvick is as good at Phoenix as any driver is at any track right now. During the past three seasons, there have been five races at Phoenix. Harvick has been the highest-scoring fantasy driver in all of them.No driver besides Harvick has broken the 100-point barrier in a single race. Harvick has AVERAGED 147.2 points per race. The next highest mark is 51.5 points per race. There have been 1,468 laps run at Phoenix in those five races. Harvick has led 994 of them.I think Ive made my point that will earn you points.Keep an eye on these four...Kyle Busch: Busch led 75 laps at Phoenix earlier this season and has finished fourth in the past two Phoenix races. Hes shown he can also put big numbers for laps led up at Phoenix, putting up 113 in the 2010 spring race and 237 in the 2012 Chase race. Hes also the leading points earner on flatter, shorter tracks this season.Carl Edwards: Edwards already has his spot in the Championship Round all locked up, so it remains to see how aggressive hell be at Phoenix. But if it takes the pressure off, it could lead to another strong Phoenix race. He finished second at Phoenix earlier this year, leading 65 laps with 39 fastest laps. Hes a two-time winner at the track, as well.Ryan Blaney: Blaney has only run one Cup race at Phoenix, finishing 10th earlier this season. He continues to run around the mid-$7,000s in cost, but he has the upside of a top-10 finish. Hes finished in the top 20 in three of the past four races on shorter flat tracks. And hes on a run of four straight top-20 finishes overall, regardless of track type.Landon Cassill: Cassill has been a solid low-cost fantasy play this season, more than just rounding out your roster. He finished 25th at Phoenix earlier this season, his first race there with Front Row Motorsports. If he didnt start 27th -- he often starts lower in the field -- hed earn more than 27 points.Thats all I have for you this week. We dont get out to the Southwest often, so enjoy some TexMex this week. Seattle Seahawks Jerseys China . Lancashire batsman Haseeb Hameed will become the youngest debutant to open for England in Test cricket, in the first match against India in Rajkot.Hameed, aged 19 and 297 days by the time the game starts, will become Englands fifth-youngest Test debutant, and Alastair Cooks tenth opening partner since the 2012.Ben Duckett, who opened the batting in Bangladesh and made a sparky half-century in his final innings of the series, will move down to No. 4 to accommodate Hameed. Gary Ballance, who scored just 24 runs in four innings in Bangladesh, was dropped from the XI for Rajkot.Hameed enjoyed a breakthrough season in the 2016 Championship campaign. Opening the batting for Lancashire, he scored almost 1200 runs at an average of 49.91. The four centuries he scored included two in a match against a strong Yorkshire attack. As a right-hander, he will also correct a slight imbalance in an England top order that, in Bangladesh, saw five left-handers in their top six. While he was born in Bolton, Hameed has a strong affiliation with India and Gujarat in particular. His parents - who will be at the game - were born here and his brother was married here in recent days. He names Sachin Tendulkar, who he met as a seven-year-old, and Virat Kohli among his heroes and, in 2010, he travelled to Mumbai to learn to bat on the citys maidans that have been the breeding ground of many fine cricketers.Haseeb has impressed everyone so far on this trip, Cook said. You wonder if a 19-year-old, coming on tour, will be overawed but he hasnt been at all. He has looked really good in the nets and the way he has gone about his business. Its obviously a very special day to pick someone so young. He is incredibly unflappable. He looks a very good player of spin. He picks length well and uses the crease well. Stuart Broad bowled at him last summer and was almost straight on the phone to me saying how impressed he was with this guy.He is one of those natural run-scorers. All through his age group, whatever team and whatever standard, he has scored runs. Its probably a year earlier than he would have thought. But to average 50-odd as an opener in Division One as a 19-year-old is an incredible feat. I was nowhere near the player he is at 19.Of course there will be some tough moments for him over the next few of playing Test cricket, but I think this guy can play. While Cook admitted it was not ideal to move Duckett down the order after two Tests, he did not foresee any negative impact. Hes a pretty unflappable character, Cook said. Historically he has played all his cricket in the middle order until the last year. Hes comfortable batting anywhere.Hameeds selection means no place for Jos Buttler, who has only played one first-class match since he was dropped a year ago, or Ballance, who has averaged only 19.90 in the six Tests since he was recalled in July and failed to reach 30 in his last seven innings. It was a tough decision, Cook said. Jos has played some really good one-day cricket on this tour and his batting looks in really good shape in the nets. But he hasnt played that much first-class cricket. Gary hasnt scored the runs he would have liked.Cook also played down talk about his imminent retirement as captain, after being quoted by the Cricketer magazine as saying: I dont know how much longer I am going to carry on. It could be two months, it could be a year. But talking ahead of the Test, Cook reiterated his oft-stated view that he will take the role series by series. Its a mountain out of a mole hill, he said. Its been blown out of proportion. Since the World Cup, I have been very open and we have taken it series by series. It could be two months, six months or two years. The Rajkot game will represent the 55th time Cook has captained England at Test level, surpassing the previous record of 54 times by Michael Atherton. Brisbane Roar insists their W-League team will be financially better off this season than last despite asking 14 players to take pay cuts and showing one the door.Professional Footballers Australia is again at loggerheads with the Roar, whose latest off-field controversy surrounds attempts to reverse decisions taken by former managing director Daniel Cobb.Cobb served in the job for two months before he was sacked by owners the Bakrie Group in August - but seven days before he was dismissed, he presented increased contract offers to W-League players, among them Matildas co-captain Clare Polkinghorne, Katrina Gorry and Tameka Butt. The offers were accepted and signed, but a month later, Cobbs replacement as managing director Mark Kingsman told the players their new contracts were excessive and wouldnt be honoured, with one import told she was no longer required.Last Monday, the players were issued revised contacts on terms that would see their salaries drop by 40 per cent compared with what they were offered by Cobb, amounting to total savings of $45,000 for the Roar. But Kingsman claims the Roar will go very, very close to spending the full W-League salary cap of $150,000 this season and says it is unfair to suggest anyone is being ripped off. Were paying almost three times as much to the same number of girls as we paid last year, hhe told ABC Radio.ddddddddddddThats a tremendous step forward and in line with that weve created a far better coaching practice, medical practice, player welfare... I would refute that we are in any way disadvantaging our girls.PFA is concerned why no male players were asked to take pay cuts or why the club couldnt have found savings of $45,000 elsewhere in their budget.A club statement said the Roar were engaged in positive dialogue with the players, who are believed to be unhappy that legally-binding contracts they signed in good faith are being renegotiated, but are somewhat understanding of the circumstances. It is an awkward situation for the Roar when other womens sports like netball have taken huge strides forward with pay and conditions, with the decision by the Bakries to appoint Cobb in June coming back to haunt them.Little due diligence was done on Cobb, a Melbourne-based businessman who claimed he was the leader of a consortium that had agreed to buy the club. The sale never happened, and Cobb is understood to have left behind a complicated financial mess.PFA chief executive John Didiluca said they were working closely with Roar players and W-League chief Greg ORourke to resolve the impasse. RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Japanese womens basketball team talked the upbeat pregame talk that any team worth a nickel usually does. But once this quarterfinal knockout game at the Rio Summer Olympics started, the Japanese were actually backing the talk up against the heavily favored U.S. as if theyd cribbed every trick that prohibitive underdogs from Princeton to Chaminade, Danny & the Miracles to Jackie Stiles and Southeastern Oklahoma State used once upon a time. The Japanese cut, they curled off well-set screens, they dribbled and drove and made kickout passes to perimeters shooters who shot like they never expected to miss. For a while it was so effective you might have expected to see Pete Carril in their huddle during a timeout. They played a now you see us, now you dont brand of uptempo basketball that dared the Americans to keep up, but they brought out the best in the Americans, too. The U.S. was grateful for the push.Japan trailed by as little as 46-44 near the end of the second quarter before the U.S. quashed any thoughts of a monumental upset and limited Japan to just 18 points over the last two quarters for a 110-64 win.We needed this kind of game, we needed this, American guard Angel McCoughtry said. They were hard to handle, they had us worried, Diana Taurasi said. That was the first time we went into the locker room here and said, Weve got to get this going. The U.S. now moves into Thursdays semifinal round opposite France, which defeated Canada on Tuesday. Spain plays in the other semifinal against Serbia, the reigning European champs who upset Australia earlier in the day 73-71, sending the Aussies home without a medal for the first time since 1992.For an American team that has steamrolled its way through these Olympic Games by winning its first five game by an average margin of 40 points, you could tell parts of this game were fun. The Americans had a total of only 10 days of practice together to prepare for these Games, and until they were tested like this, McCoughtry said, they didnt really know how theyd respond. The answer, as it turned out, was that everyone played well. The U.S. shot 67 percent from the field against the undersized Japanese team, whose tallest player is 6-foot-3.The only downbeat outcome of the game for the U.S. was that Sue Bird, the teams four-time Olympic point guard, left the game after suffering an undisclosed knee injury in a second-quarter collision. On the advice of the team trainer and doctors, she didnt return. When asked after the game if she was OK as she was walking through the mixed zone press area, Bird nodded and said, Oh yeah.Taurasi said, Hopefully everything will check out OK in the morning.Bird always tried to tell people the womens basketball team will have a game or two at every international competition thats interesting like this. She swears these Olympic competitions arent automatic American wins. But its always a hard sell. The American women have won five straight gold medals. Theyre riding a 47-game winning streak. The gap between them and the rest of the worlds Olympic teams seems to have gotten wider in the last three or four Olympics, not narrower. But theres a generational shift underway, too. Thirty-somethings such as Bird, Taurasi, Tamika Catchings, Lindsay Whalen and Seimone Augustus -- nearly half of the 12-player roster -- will almost surely be retired by the next Summer Games.Japan will host those Olympics, in Tokyo. So remember this night.American coach Geno Auriemma called Japans offense as good as Ive ever seen as far as how quickly they move the ball and how quickly they move themselves.Taurasi said Japan is just a couple of pieces away from being one of the top four or five teams in the world. But not only that.Whewwww, said McCoughtry, the U.S. teams most vocal worrier, exhaling heavily. It was tough chasing them around and around. Adidas Cam Fowler Jersey . 1 position. HOUSTON -- When Lance Lynn began to struggle with his control, the Houston Astros made the most of the opportunity. Erik Bedard pitched six effective innings and the Astros used a four-run fourth to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Wednesday night. "That was huge for us to capitalize on that inning and really maximize that situation," said Jason Castro, who singled and scored in the rally. Bedard (3-3) allowed seven hits and walked one, but limited St. Louis to three runs. Josh Fields, Wesley Wright and Jose Cisnero then combined to pitch two hitless innings before Jose Veras worked the ninth for his 16th save. Veras yielded a one-out single to Jon Jay and then walked Matt Adams, but pinch hitter Daniel Descalso struck out and Matt Carpenter flied out to end the game. "They did a tremendous job," Houston manager Bo Porter said of his relievers. "Veras ran into a little bit of trouble but was able to make the necessary pitches in the ninth to get out of it and close it out." Allen Craig homered for the second straight night and Yadier Molina had a two-run shot for the Cardinals, who lost for the fourth time in five games. They dropped into a tie with surging Pittsburgh for the lead in the NL Central. Lynn (10-2) allowed five hits, walked four and struck out four over 7 2-3 innings for his first loss in four career starts in Houston. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said it looked as if Lynn lost his rhythm in the fourth. "It wasnt a good inning," Lynn said. "The hits werent the problem -- it was the walks. When you walk people, you get yourself in trouble, and thats what happened. I just didnt throw strikes." Molina and Craig helped the Cardinals get off to a nice start. Molina followed Carpenters leadoff single in the first with a drive to the Crawford Boxes in left field for his sixth homer. Craig had a leadoff drive in the fourth that bounced off the lights atop the wall in left field, extending the lead to 3-0. But Houston responded in the bottom half. Jose Altuve and Castro got it started with back-to-back singles for the Astros first hits of the game. Lynn then walked Chris Carter on four pitches to load the bases before sending a run home when he also walked Carlos Pena on four pitches. Carter leads the majors with 108 strikeouts this season, but Porter was impressed with his patience in the big inning. "His at-bats have gotten extremely disciplined from a standpoint of hes attacking the pitches that he should attack -- not expanding (the zone) as often as he was earlier in the year, and hes putting together some really good at-bats," Porter said. Castro came home when J.D. Martinez grounded into a fielders choice, and Brett Wallace then hit a tying RBI single. After another fielders choice, Brandon Barnes singled in Wallace to give Houston the lead for good. The Astros threatened again in the fifth, putting two runners on with two out, but Lynn retired Martinez to end the inning. That was the first of eight straight batters retired by Lynn, who began the day with a 3-0 record and a 2.00 ERA in three games in Houston. Fields retired the first two St. Louis batters in the seventh before left-hander Wright struck out Carpenter. Cisnero faced the heart of the Cardinals order in the eighth. He got Molina on a groundout before walking Carlos Beltran. He then struck out Craig and Matt Holliday to finish the inning. "That was one of those situations where he pretty much just bulled his neck and said: Im going to throw my best against anybody that steps in the box, and he was able to get it done," Porter said of Cisnero. "I felt like his fastball had really good life, and he actually pumped it up the last couple at 95." NOTES: Molina played first base for the second time in his career and the first since 2008. Matheny said Molina could "probably play just about anywhere on the infield." He said playing him at first base is a good way to give his legs a rest. "Hes caught more innings than any other catcher," Matheny said. "His body has been able to handle it so far, but its going to be a tough task. Were not trying to set any records here, were just reading his body and days like this are going to be able to keep one of the top bats in baseball in the lineup while not beating him up behind the plate." ... India captain MS Dhoni said he had guessed correctly that the final delivery from Dwayne Bravo would be a slower ball but his execution of the shot let him down. With two runs needed off one ball, Dhoni was caught at short third man and West Indies won the first T20 international by the narrowest of margins.Dhoni said his team should be commended for their valiant chase in the highest-scoring T20 game ever. I feel there were plenty of positives in this game because the way we chased down 245 runs, apart from the last ball, he said after the match. I felt we were totally in the game. Even the last ball, the thinking was right, the execution was wrong.A cat-and-mouse game that had been developing over the course of the final six balls reached a new level as Bravo engaged in several discussions, stalling for several minutes ahead of the last ball, with two required by Dhoni to secure what would have been a record chase. Even though Dhoni said he knew what was going to be sent down, he praised Bravos skills in such a pressure moment. When it comes to Bravo, I feel in the current scenario hes among the best when it comes to the death bowling, Dhoni said. The amount of experience that he has really counts so you always know if hes bowling its tough. What then becomes important is how were executing. You have to really guess what hes looking to bowl and according to that you play your shots. So if you guess the bowler well and execute well, youll end up winning. Rather than thinking who is bowling, whats important is to think what his strength is and where hell look to pitch the next delivery.Despite India conceding the third highest total in a T20I, Dhoni praised his bowlers for their effort to reel West Indies back in after Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis added 126 for the first wicket in 9.3 overs. By the end of the 11th over - a 32-run sequence in which Lewis struck the first five legal deliveries from Stuart Binny for six before mis-hitting a full toss - West Indies were 164 for 1.Dhoni said he thought West Indies were on track for 270 or more before R Ashwin started to shift momentum with a four-run 12th over, bowling with the breeze at his back. The wind from the pavilion end helped the spinners throughout the rest of the innings, and Ashwin and RRavindra Jadeja conceded just 18 runs in the 12th, 14th and 16th overs.dddddddddddd Indias pace bowlers also began nailing their yorkers and the result was just 40 runs off the final four overs to keep West Indies to 245.I felt the way the boys performed overall was very good, Dhoni said. I was very happy how we brought the opposition down when it came to the last eight overs. That really matters because that is something where we have struggled quite consistently but it was a good exposure to our bowlers and they finished up well to restrict them to 245.Dhoni also praised the batting efforts of KL Rahul, who struck his maiden T20I century in just his fourth match. Rahul ended 110 not out off 51 balls, having missed the fastest T20I ton by two deliveries, taking 46 balls to reach three figures. He has been very consistent, Dhoni said. I feel that is a strength of Rahul also, compact player but at the same time unorthodox shots. He plays all over the ground, over covers, mid off, mid on. So a complete cricketer. Of course theres a long way to go for him but the way he has played in the last six months, its very encouraging to see him bat.As for the experience of playing in Florida in front of a heavily partisan Indian diaspora, Dhoni joked that even if were playing in Bermuda Triangle, theyll be there. He also praised the efforts put in by the groundstaff at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill. The facility is as good as anywhere else, Dhoni said. The ground itself is up to international standard. You cant score 500 runs on a bad wicket, so fantastic wicket. The practice wickets were fantastic. When it comes to the stadium, its not a big stadium. The moment I say stadium I mean the number of fans it can house. I think its close to 15,000. So overall looking at everything as a complete package, I think it was fantastic. We had fun. When it comes to the Indian fans, its a pleasure playing in front of them. They follow us everywhere wherever we are playing. So its a first time we are playing in the USA but not to forget we have a big Indian community out here so thanks to them for coming and watching the game. ' ' '

A week ago, Boise States hopes of a Mountain West Conference title got a significant and unlikely boost from UNLV.The Rebels reward for helping out the Broncos? Having to face No. 22 Boise State on Friday night knowing the Broncos have no room for error in their attempt to catch Wyoming in the conferences Mountain Division. So much for saying thanks to the Rebels. They know how to game plan. They seem to have a plan for each opponent, and their guys make plays, Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. I think its a very tough football team. And offensively, they find ways to move the football. They do have some creative ways of doing it by using their quarterback.Boise State (9-1, 5-1 Mountain West, No. 20 CFP) still does not control its path to the Mountain West championship game even with UNLVs 69-66 triple overtime win over Wyoming last week. The Broncos must win their final two and have Wyoming lose at least once to claim a spot in the title game.Getting there gained more importance this week when the Broncos leaped Western Michigan in the College Football Playoff rankings, putting them in position to claim the Group of Five berth in one of the major New Years bowl games. But the Broncos must win the conference title to gain that berth. We never feel like we control anything until the end of the year. ... Weve got UNLV. Thats it, Harsin said. As simple as that. Weve learned our lesson. We have UNLV. Were going to focus on UNLV. Were trying to play our best game of the season. We feel like we have a little bit of momentum in some areas. A little bit of confidence. Were executing better in some areas.UNLV (4-6, 3-3) needs to win its final two games to become bowl eligible. The win over Wyoming was a huge moment for coach Tony Sanchezs program in overcoming mounting adversity. The Rebels are on their third quarterback of the season and lost all-conference wide receiver Devonte Boyd to a season-ending broken arm.Boyd was the fourth wide receiver to be lost to a season-ending injury. Its kind of a crazy deal. Our whole staff talked about it -- that weve neverr seen one entire group, Sanchez said.dddddddddddd Its one of those deals where you almost have to laugh about it.Other things to watch as the Broncos go for their fifth straight win over the Rebels:RYPIENS SURGE: Over the past two games, Boise State QB Brett Rypien has been nearly perfect. Thats not an exaggeration. Against San Jose State and Hawaii, Rypien was a combined 34 of 43 for 557 yards and seven touchdowns -- nearly as many touchdowns as incompletions. Its an impressive rebound for Rypien after struggling in the Broncos loss at Wyoming.Hes just getting better. Experience for him. He never had that redshirt year, there are things that he is learning as hes gone through this season, Harsin said.NEXT IN LINE: Kurt Palandech was third in line at quarterback for UNLV when the season started. He enters Fridays game as the Mountain West offensive player of the week after setting career highs in completions, yards passing, yards rushing and touchdowns in the upset of Wyoming. Palandech was 20 of 32 for 252 yards and three TDs, and added 157 yards on 16 carries.SPERBECKS FAREWELL: It could be the final game on the blue turf for record-setting Boise State wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck. Hes the school record-holder for yards receiving and one of five receivers in school history with more than 200 receptions. After a quiet game against San Jose State where he had just two catches, Sperbeck rebounded last week against Hawaii with five receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns, pushing him over the 1,000-yard mark in receiving for the season. Sperbecks nine touchdown catches are tied with Cedrick Wilson for the team lead.RANKED WIN: UNLV is 4-34 all-time against teams ranked in the AP Top 25. The last such victory came eight years ago when the Rebels upset Arizona State. All four of UNLVs wins over AP ranked teams have come on the road.---For more college football: http://collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
New FIFA president Gianni Infantino faced awkward questions on Friday after announcing a sponsorship agreement with a Chinese conglomerate which has links to his disgraced predecessor Sepp Blatter. FIFA announced the Wanda Group, Chinas largest commercial property company and the worlds largest cinema chain operator, had become a sponsor for the next four World Cups, up to and including the 2030 tournament.Wanda Group chairman Wang Jianlin is reportedly Chinas richest man, while Blatters nephew Philippe Blatter is president and chief executive of subsidiary company Wanda Sports Holding and Infront Sports and Media. Infantino said the terms of the deal were commercially sensitive, but it is likely to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds. Sepp Blatter, whose nephew is linked with Wanda The Swiss insisted FIFA was conscious of the need to ensure all contracts were above board.Im very well aware of the potential situations that can exist when you have partners who may have subsidiaries, Infantino said.In these circumstances its even more important to do the right thing and make sure the contracts weve signed are compliant with the highest standards.FIFA has undergone a process which makes FIFA over-sensitive to these elements and making sure all the compliance requirements are fulfilled when we sign commercial agreements. Atletico Madrid are part-owned by Wanda Wanda Group also part-owns Atletico Madrid, the Spanish side which has been sanctioned by FIFA for signing under-age players. Atletico are contesting the ban.Infantino played down the potential for conflict. We have to make a clear distinction here between two things that have nothing to do with each other, Infantino added. One thing is a commercial partnership. The other side is the sports disciplinary side which is an independent side which is dealt with by the relevant FIFA bodies. These are two independent things and Im happy these two things can be kept separate. RIO DE JANEIRO -- After winning the 1,500-meter race Saturday night, Matthew Centrowitz went to the TV interview area, took off his jersey and wrapped the American flag around his upper body. Hidden underneath that flag was a tattoo across his chest that reads, Like Father Like Son.Centrowitz has the tattoo because his father, Matt Sr., also was a 1,500 runner in the 1976 Olympics. The younger Centrowitz said his father now will get a tattoo across his chest as well because of a bet they made based on how well he did in the Olympics.Depending on the color of the medal, the more say I have, Centrowitz said. I would say it should be Like Son Like Father. That would be a good tattoo but there arent many American 1,500 runners who can say they are like the younger Centrowitz. Certainly none in the past century. His victory made him the first American since Mel Sheppard to win gold in the 1,500 at the London Olympics in 1908. Thats not only 108 years ago, it also was the last time the Cubs won the World Series.Hmmm, maybe this is the year the Cubs will win the World Series. It hasnt sunk in. Nineteen oh-eight -- I dont know if anyone still is alive who was born then at this point, Centrowitz said. Its just an honor to represent the United States, an honor to bring this medal back home. Middle-distance runners for the U.S. -- there are so many guys Im honored to be mentioned with.Jim Ryun sent me an email before the race wishing me luck and saying he and his wife were praying for me. Hes a guy that got a silver medal (in the 1972 Olympics), and being mentioned with him and being part of history? Seeing guys like Sebastian Coe and him saying, Welcome to the club, Im like, Dude, is this real right now? It is real. American runner Leonel Manzano took silver in 2012, the highest previous U.S. finish since Ryun was second at the 1968 Olympics. Centrowitz finished fourth in the London Games but was determined to finish better in Rio.I dreamed about winning gold the last couple days, Centrowitz said. Then I thought if I got silver that I would be pleased. But at the end of the day, if I got silver, I would be a little disappointed. I just didnt know gold was attainable. Asbel Kiprop is one of the greatest milers ever. Watching him in the first heat galloping round the whole field, I was thinking, Damn, this will be a hard guy to beat in the final. Instead, it was Centrowitz who was the hard guy to beat. Those Cubs who also are trying to do something this year that has not been done since 1908 have been in first place virtually every day this season. Centrowitz was like that as well Saturday, leading almost the entire race. He so determinedly maintained his first-place position that any time a competitor, such as Ayanleh Souleiman, attempted to pass him or possibly passed him by perhaps a step, he would force himself back into the lead.Forget it pal, you are not beating me.After winning with a time of 3:50.0, just .11 seconds ahead of Algerias Taoufik Makhloufi, Centrowitz circled the track, proudly carrying the U.S. flag in his raised arms. While doing so, he saw his father in the stands.I yelled at him, Are you kidding me? Centrowitz said, and he yelled back at me, Are you f---ing kidding me? And we went back and forth. An American gold in the 1,500. No, the Centrowitzs were not kidding anyone. Although the Cubs still have a challenge ahead before their fans are not kidding each other. HOUSTON -- Where the Yankees grabbed the most headlines in their trading of closer Aroldis Chapman was in the acquisition of heralded shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres. But of greater significance to their immediate future was the return of right-hander Adam Warren. Before being shipped to the Cubs on Dec. 8, 2015, Warren played a critical role on the Yankees staff, going 7-7 with a 3.29 ERA in 43 games (17 starts) last season. By reacquiring Warren, the Yankees might have plugged the one glaring hole in their still-vaunted bullpen: long relief. Were going to move (Andrew) Miller back to the ninth and Dellin (Betances) will be the eighth and then how we choose to use Adam (becomes key), Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. Part of the thing that we have struggled with the past month or so is the bridge. It could be a job thats right for Adam in a sense. We could start him because I know hes built up. Those innings are extremely important.Itd be really helpful, guys that can go through a lineup one time and give us three innings in a sense because we have to be somewhat careful with Dellin and Andrew. Weve had a lot of close games lately and theyve been used a lot. But I think that (long relief) role is important.Warren is set to arrive in Houston on Tuesday. The Yankees (51-48) didnt need him in the series opener against the Astros, riding a strong start from Michael Pineda and the usual brilliance of Betances and Miller to a 2-1 victory. Veteran left-hander CC Sabathia (5-8, 4.04 ERA) will start the middle game of the three-game series on Tuesday night.Sabathia took the loss in his previous start, a 4-1 setback to the Orioles last Thursday on his 36th birthday. Sabathia remains winless in five career starts on his birthday and has allowed at least seven hits and four earned runs in each of his last six starts. He is winless in that stretch.Sabathia is 1-1 with a 4.80 ERA in two career starts against Houston.Right-hander Doug Fister (10-6, 3.42 ERA) will start for Houston against the Yankees. He is 2-2 with a 5.22 ERA in five career starts against New York but is coming off a 7-0 win over the Athletics where he tossed seven shutout innings allowing four hits and two walks. While the Yankees were dealing with the hoopla of the Chapman trade, the Astros (54-45) were managing the hype surround the debut of prized prospect Alex Bregman, who played third base and hit sixth.Although Bregman finished 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts while stranding six baserunners, his defense at the hot corner was a pleasant surprise. Drafted second overall in 2015 as a shortstop, Bregman moved to third base following his recent promotion to Triple-A Fresno. Against the Yankees on Monday night, he recorded five assists and made a couple strong defensive plays to set a positive tone for his second game.He was exceptional on defense at a position he hadnt played too many innings at, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of Bregman. The moment wasnt too big for him. The game wasnt too fast. His ability to be athletic and make plays was tested early in the first couple of innings. Yorkshire Diamonds 166 for 6 (Blackwell 59) beat Lancashire Thunder 71 (Hazell 4-10, Brunt 3-6) by 95 runsScorecard England seamer Katherine Brunt took a hat-trick as Yorkshire brushed Lancashire aside to claim their first Kia Womens Super League win.Brunt mopped up the Thunder tail as they were 71 all out in 15 overs chasing 167, after Alex Blackwells 59 had underpinned the Diamonds 166 for 6 at Emirates Old Trafford.Unfortunately, neither side will be at Finals Day, after slow starts to the competition. Yorkshire have one fixture remaining.Brunt had Laura Newton caught at mid-on before trapping Kate Cross and Nalisha Patel lbw in a 95-run bonus point win, having also hit a breezy 36 in Yorkshires total, the second highest score of the competition.Blackwell shared 47 and 69 for the third and fourth wickets with compatriot Beth Mooney and Ashes rival Brunt as the Diamonds recovered from 16 for 2 in the fourth over having elected to bat.Blackwell hit five fours and two leg-side sixes, off Natalie Brown and Cross. The Red Rose were hurt by ill-discipline in the field, as they were last Friday when they conceded eleven wides during a defeat to Southern Vipers at Blackpool. Here, they were penalised six penalty runs for failing to bowl their overs in time, and they were very close to conceding 12 given they only just started the 19th over inside the 7.15pm cut-off time.Lancashire were on the back foot early in their chase when West Indian Hayley Matthews steered Ismail to slip as they slipped to 4 for 1 in the second over.Ismail and Brunt helped to restrict the hosts to 31 for 1 after six, although captain Amy Satterthwaite ended the power play with successive boundaries off Katie Levicks leg-spin.But Lancashires chances of a second win in their last match were up shortly afterwards as they lost three wickets in eleven balls to slip to 40 for 4 in the ninth.Hazell bowled Emma Lamb, Levick had Danni Wyatt stumped and Ismail bowled captain Satterthwaite. The Thunder reached halfway at 51 for 4, needing 116 more, before Threlkeld was controversially reprieved after being run out off a no ball.West Indian Deandra Dottin hit an above-waist high full toss to deep square-leg, where Brunt took a superb one-handed catch. With Threlkeld scrambling to get back in her ground at the non-strikers end, she was run out before the umpires ruled the ball had become dead.Thankfully, it did not matter as Hazell struck three times in five balls in the 12th and 14th overs, leaving the score at 69 for 7.She had Threlkeld caught at mid-off before bowling Natalie Brown and Dottin for 25 in the space of three balls. Olympic organisers admit they have been left red faced over Rios green pool.Five days after noticing the water turn teal, embarrassed organisers have made the radical decision to drain a pool at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center and refill it before the synchronised swimming starts on Sunday. However officials claimed they were happy with the progress of the adjacent green diving pool at the venue, dubbed The Swamp by competitors.Rio Games organising committee spokesman Mario Andrada said water from the venues warm-up area would be pumped overnight into the murky main pool which had been used for water polo. The nearby diving pool continued to be used for competition on Saturday despite athletes claiming the water was worse than ever. Its pretty gross, Australian diver Maddison Keeney said.It was probably the worst it has been today. Andrada said water in the main pool would be replaced because synchronised swimming competitors and judges needed to see underwater, unlike diving. He insisted the competitors health was not at risk but admitted it wasnt a good look.Of course it is an embarrassment, he said. But embarrassment does not last forever.Weve leearned a painful lesson.ddddddddddddWe have over promised and under delivered. He said the colour change on Tuesday was due to 80 litres of hydrogen peroxide being mistakenly added to the pool by a local contractor on August 5.A venue spokesman said that had affected the chlorines ability to kill algae.Asked if they had a Plan B, Andrada said: We do but we always found Plan A is better than Plan B.Andrada insisted biological tests had confirmed there was no health risk despite the presence of algae.I dont want to know what is in there, Keeney said.I have never seen anything like it before.Officials started draining the pool on Saturday afternoon.Morning training sessions were cancelled on Thursday to allow the water to be still for longer, officials hoping it would speed up the process of killing the algae. Some athletes have complained of itchy or sore eyes.German diver Stephan Feck also posted on Facebook a photo of himself near the pool, holding his nose. The whole venue smells like somebody has fart(ed), he wrote. SAN DIEGO -- Paul Henderson, a former president of sailings world governing body who also once served on the International Olympic Committee, is running for president of World Sailing. The 81-year-old Henderson said the governing body is too focused on making money and not enough on protecting the interest of sailors. If elected, he says he would streamline the number of foundations and bank accounts at World Sailing. He said he hired a forensic accountant who found that World Sailing has at least six accounts in various jurisdictions. He said it should have two at the most.Henderson, of Toronto, doesnt believe World Sailing is trying to hide money.Hiding is the wrong word, he said. Are they open and transparent? No. It needs to be much more detailed than it is.Henderson was president of what was then called the International Sailing Federation from 1994-2004.Hes running against incumbent Carlo Croce of Italy and Kim Anderson of Denmark. Voting for the four-year term will be on Sunday during the General Assembly in Barcelona.Henderson, a retired plumber, said he was encouraged by several people to run for the post.I dont think Ill get elected but at least Ill have a platform, he said in a phone interview.Of particular interest to Henderson is the Sailing Foundation that is being set up in Switzerland. Although World Sailing, based in Southampton, England, says there is no formal relationship between it and the foundation, Croce and two World Sailing vice presidents, including treasurer W. Scott Perry, are listed as directors. The foundations president is King Constantine of Greece, a former Olympic sailing gold medalist who is president of honor of World Sailing. Also listed as a director is Valery Gulev, the senior vice president of the Russian Sailing Federation who is a former executive with Russian energy giant Gazprom. World Sailing said there is no other relationship between the foundation and Gazprom.Gazprom signed a five-year, 5 million euro ($5.52 million) sponsorship deal with World Sailing, then known as ISAF, in December 2014.World Sailing said the foundation will raise funds from corporate donors to support the development of sailing. Because the foundation has not yet been approved by the Survey for International Foundations in Switzerland, it cannot set up a bank account, World Sailing said.Henderson said there are many unanswered questions about the foundation.Wheres all the money going? Whats going on here? Henderson said. They say this Swiss foundation is to promote sailing and youth sailing in emerging countries, which is all World Sailings job. They say they dont have anything to do with one another.Perry said in an email that the Gazprom sponsorship money goes to the World Sailing (UK) Ltd. account and nowhere else. Both Perry and World Sailing CEO Andy Hunt declined to provide a copy of the Gazprom deal to The Associated Press, saying it was covered by confidentiality clauses. We are reducing our reliance on the Olympic income which we receive once every four years by building increasingly successful sponsorship and commercial programs, Hunt said in an email. These initiatives ensure the sport is economically sustainable and help to ensure that we can continue to invest in the growth and development. Without successful commercial programs, it would be very difficult to create a virtuous circle of success for the sport.Hunt, World Sailings third CEO since October 2014, said he disagrees with Hendersons contention that World Sailing lacks financial transparency.I struggle to understand any claim that we are not transparent, Hunt said, saying World Sailings accounts are audited and published on its website. It is disappointing that there has been some significant misinformation that has been circulating on email and in the sailing media over the past few months which relate to a number of areas of administration at World Sailing.Henderson disagrees, saying he feels World Sailing is driven by money instead of being driven by being the governing body of the sport. CHICAGO -- Moments after his successful return to Chicago with the U.S. national team, Jimmy Butler pulled on a T-shirt with a picture of Brazilian soccer star Pele on the front.Yup, its almost time.Kyrie Irving scored 13 points, DeMarcus Cousins powered a dominant performance in the paint, and the United States pulled away from Venezuela for an ugly 80-45 exhibition victory Friday night.Coming off three straight flashy victories in Las Vegas and California, the United States used a strong fourth quarter to shoot 42.4 percent from the field in by far its worst offensive performance of its five-city tour in preparation for the Rio Olympics. But the Americans used their superior athleticism to limit Venezuela to 24 percent shooting and owned the interior with a 54-29 rebounding advantage.Quite frankly, Im very pleased about tonight because you dont just want to just hit 17 3s and not work hard, U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said. We had to work real hard tonight.Butler, a two-time All-Star with the Bulls, had four points and eight rebounds in 21 1/2 minutes in his first start with Team USA. He was cheered every time he was announced at the United Center. This is like home for me now, Butler said. Im glad that I got to play here for USA in front of my hometown crowd. Theyve embraced me since Day 1. I hope they continue to do so. I want to win with the Bulls. I want to win with USA and bring a championship with the Bulls and a gold medal here.Butler had one of the few electric plays for the U.S. when he ran out on the break and dunked Kyle Lowrys tip pass in the fourth quarter. DeAndre Jordan also had a vicious dunk off a lob from Kevin Durant, and DeMar DeRozan drew chants of USA! USA! with a windmill jam in the final minutes.Klay Thompson also scored 13 points, and Cousins finished with seven points and 12 rebounds. Durant had nine points of 3-of-9 shooting for the U.S., which plays one more exhibition on Monday against Nigeria before departing for Brazil. We just kept fighting defensiveely, and we were great (in that area), Durant said.dddddddddddd And in the second half, we made some shots.John Cox scored 14 points for Venezuela, which will play the U.S. again on Aug. 8 in the Olympics. Nestor Colmenares pulled down 10 rebounds.Their defense is so good because they can switch everything because of their length and athleticism, Cox said. So theres not really another team in the Olympics that can do that.Irving and company were greeted with a round of hearty cheers when they came out for pregame warmups. Fans flocked to the side of the court where the Americans had their layup line, and Anthony and Durant posed for pictures with a couple of eager boys. Before Butlers introduction drew the most applause of the night, former Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau received a thunderous ovation when he was announced with the U.S. coaching staff. Thibodeau took a year off after he was fired by the Bulls in May 2015, and then was hired as Minnesotas coach and president of basketball operations in April.Hes the best as far as preparation and team player and whatever, and the fans appreciate it, said Krzyzewski, a Chicago native. It was great. I love the fact that my town gave a guy who gave them his heart and soul for the number of years hes been here, and acknowledged that. Thats a great, great thing. The star power also extended to the sideline near the U.S. bench, where former Olympians Scottie Pippen and Dwyane Wade watched the action attentively. Wade was joined by his wife, actress Gabriel Union, hours after he held his introductory press conference for his new contract with his hometown Bulls.Pippen played on the 1992 Dream Team that rolled to gold in Barcelona, and also helped the U.S. win gold in 1996. Wade was on the Americans gold medal-winning teams at each of the last two Olympics.---Jay Cohen can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/jcohenap ' ' '
DETROIT -- Jarrod Saltalamacchias drive was so high in the air, it was fair to doubt whether it had the right trajectory to clear the wall in right-center field.I saw the outfielders kind of meeting right at that little Bermuda Triangle out there, so I got a little scared, Saltalamacchia said. When I didnt see them catch it, I was definitely happy.Saltalamacchias two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.Justin Upton also went deep for the Tigers, who pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American Leagues second wild card.Detroit trailed 3-2 after a solo homer in the seventh by Chicagos Tyler Saladino, but Saltalamacchias towering drive off Nate Jones (5-3) put the Tigers ahead. It was Saltalamacchias 12th homer of the season. For a backup catcher, hes had some production, manager Brad Ausmus said. James Shields allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, ending an awful August on a decent note, but the White Sox couldnt hold a one-run lead for him.The first couple innings I was a little erratic, but I thought I settled down and was able to pound the strike zone, Shields said. Ive really done that in my last few starts, but tonight I think I had more luck.Shields was 0-4 with a 13.95 ERA in five August starts coming into Mondays game, but the Tigers didnt do much against him. Miguel Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly in the third, but Saladinos two-run single put the White Sox ahead the following inning.Upton tied it in the sixth with a solo home run. On the eve of a new NFL season, ESPNs power panel (a group of more than 80 writers, editors and TV personalities) has Seattle and Pittsburgh ranked first and second. The Steelers have impressed this offseason, moving up to No. 2 after ranking sixth in the preseason edition.ESPNs Stats & Information contributed the following information.1. Seattle Seahawks2015 record: 10-6 Preseason ranking: No. 1Russell Wilson set career highs in just about every passing category last season, but the top-ranked Seahawks would probably prefer to reduce his workload this season. Wilson is 14-10 in his career when throwing 30-plus passes in a game, and 32-8 when throwing fewer than 30 passes.2. Pittsburgh Steelers2015 record: 10-6 Preseason ranking: No. 6The past two seasons rank as the highest-scoring seasons in Steelers franchise history. The Steel Curtain might be no more, but with an offense like that, theyd probably still win with linen curtains.3. New England Patriots2015 record: 12-4 Preseason ranking: No. 3What do you got, Jimmy Garoppolo? He makes his first career start against a defense that was second in takeaways (33) and had the highest blitz percentage (45 percent) last season. Garoppolo has faced eight blitzes in his NFL career.4. Arizona Cardinals2015 record: 13-3 Preseason ranking: No. 2Carson Palmer was the model of consistency last season, posting an above-average Total QBR (more than 50) in 15 of his 16 games played. More of that play will keep the Cardinals in the mix for as long as it happens.5. Carolina Panthers2015 record: 15-1 Preseason ranking: No. 5The Panthers won their first 14 games to start the 2015 season but could be staring an 0-1 start in the face in 2016. In two career starts against the Broncos, Cam Newton has taken 13 sacks and posted an 11.1 Total QBR.6. Green Bay Packers2015 record: 10-6 Preseason ranking: No. 4According to ESPNs Football Power Index (FPI), the Packers are currently favored in all 16 games this season. That doesnt mean theyll go 16-0, but odds are the Packers could find themselves climbing even higher than sixth in these rankings in the near future.7. Cincinnati Bengals2015 record: 12-4 Preseason ranking: No. 7With Tyler Eifert out and with no clear-cut No. 2 wide receiver, the Bengals could try to ride Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard in the early going. That might work in the long run, but their Week 1 opponent, the Jets, had the second-best rush defense last season.8. Denver Broncos2015 record: 12-4 Preseason ranking: No. 8Trevor Siemian?has earned the start for the Broncos in Week 1 despite having one career NFL snap, but his play might not be the difference. Broncos quarterbacks had the second-worst TD-INT differential last season and still won the Super Bowl.9. Kansas City Chiefs2015 record: 11-5 Preseason ranking: No. 9The Chiefs started 1-5 last season but won their final 10 games. If they can get off to a better start this season, thatll give them a nice cushion as they wait for Jamaal Charles and Justin Houston to return to full health.10. New York Jets2015 record: 10-6 Preseason ranking: No. 15The Jets first six games this season are against teams that finished .500 or better in 2015, and four of them are on the road. The Jets played nine games against teams that finished under .500 last season, tied for fourth-most in the NFL, and went 7-2 in those games.11. Oakland Raiders2015 record: 7-9 Preseason ranking: No. 11Anyone who thinks Derek Carrs 2015 season might have been a one-time thing will probably have to wait at least a week to feel vindicated. Carr faces a Saints team that allowed the worst NFL passer rating in league history last season.12. Minnesota Vikings2015 record: 11-5 Preseason ranking: No. 10Teddy Bridgewaters injury forced the Vikings to pay a steep price for Sam Bradford in hopes of salvaging their season. Problem is, Bradfords career Total QBR of 40.5 is lower than Shaun Hills 45.6.13. Houston Texans2015 record: 9-7 Preseason ranking: No. 16New quarterback. New running back. A few new wide receivers. The Texans offense will look a lot different this season, and theyre hoping the results will be different, too. The Texans have ranked 24th in scoring the past three seasons.14. Washington Redskins2015 record: 9-7 Preseason ranking: No. 18Theres a good chance the Redskins will find themselves a little lower in the Week 2 Power Rankings. They open their season on Monday Night Football against the Steelers (7:10 ET, ESPN). The Redskins havent beaten the Steelers since 1991.15. Baltimore Ravens2015 record: 5-11 Preseason ranking: No. 12The Ravens dont stay down for long, and a home game against the Bills seems like a recipe to start on the right foot. The Ravens havent missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 2004-05.16. Buffalo Bills2015 record: 8-8 Preseason ranking: No. 24Tyrod Taylor and Rex Ryan make their triumphant returns to Baltimore to start their season. The Bills havent won in Baltimore since 1999, which is, coincidentally, the last time the Bills made the playoffs.17. New York Giants2015 record:?6-10 Preseason ranking: No. 17The Giants are 0-8 all time in season openers against the Cowboys and have lost three straight in Dallas. A new coach and a shiny new defense could buck those trends in Week 1 though.18. Indianapolis Colts2015 record: 8-8 Preseason ranking: No. 14Andrew Luck struggled last season, but in his last game played he did beat the eventual Super Bowl champion Broncos, one of two games last season in which he didnt commit a turnover. The Colts need more of that Luck to keep rising in the rankings.19. Jacksonville Jaguars2015 record: 5-11 Preseason ranking: No. 20The young Jaguars will be put to the test early when Aaron Rodgers and the Packers roll into town in Week 1. The Jaguars havent won a season opener since 2011, but they have their best offense since 2007, when they finished sixth in scoring and made the playoffs.20. Detroit Lions2015 record: 7-9 Preseason ranking: No. 27The Lions will take the field without Calvin Johnson in a season opener for the first time since 2006. Mike Furrey was the leading receiver for Detroit that day, but the trio of Golden Tate, Marvin Jones and Anquan Boldin figure to do a little better this time around.21. Miami Dolphins2015 record:6-10 Preseason ranking: No. 26The Dolphins start their season on the road against the No. 1-ranked Seahawks and on the road against the No. 3-ranked Patriots. Theres a good chance the Dolphins will be lower than 21st in the rankings after that stretch.22. Atlanta Falcons2015 record: 8-8 Preseason ranking: No. 19Win or lose for the Falcons, Julio Jones figures to come out a winner in Week 1. He has averaged 9.3 receptions and 133.8 receiving yards in his past four games against the Buccaneers, catching 72.5 percent of his targets in those games.23. Dallas Cowboys2015 record: 4-12 Preseason ranking: No. 13The Cowboys took a big hit in the rankings following Tony Romos injury, and rookie Dak Prescott is in a unique position. No rookie quarterback has started and won a season opener for the Cowboys since Roger Staubach in 1969.24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers2015 record: 6-10 Preseason ranking: No. 23The Buccaneers are tied with the Titans and Cowboys for the longest active losing streak, but the good news is that they travel to Atlanta in Week 1. The Bucs swept the season series against the Falcons for the first time since 2007 last season.25. Philadelphia Eagles2015 record: 7-9 Preseason ranking: No. 25The Eagles will have a quarterback making his first career start in Week 1 against the Browns. Itll be a learning experience for Carson Wentz, but hey, at least its against the Browns.26. San Diego Chargers2015 record: 4-12 Preseason ranking: No. 28The Joey Bosa holdout finally came to an end, but will he make an impact in Week 1? The Chargers have lost four straight to their Week 1 opponents, the Chiefs, allowing nearly 5.0 yards per rush in those games.27. New Orleans Saints2015 record: 7-9 Preseason ranking: No. 22The Saints get to open their 2016 season at home, but that doesnt mean much for New Orleans anymore. The Saints are 4-9 in their past 13 home games, losing three of the past four.28. Los Angeles Rams2015 record: 7-9 Preseason ranking: No. 29The last quarterback to go first overall and not play in Week 1 was JaMarcus Russell in 2007, but the Rams hands are tied. When youve got a quarterback in Case Keenum with a career 5-10 record and 38 career Total QBR, you have to start him instead.29. Chicago Bears2015 record: 6-10 Preseason ranking: No. 21Bad news for Jay Cutler: J.J. Watt is now expected to play in Week 1. The last time Cutler faced a Watt-led defense was in 2012. Cutler didnt last two full quarters and threw two interceptions, and the Bears scored six points. Cutler wasnt sacked though ...30. Tennessee Titans2015 record: 3-13 Preseason ranking: No. 30Week 1 has been the Titans time to shine; theyve won their last three openers by a total of 51 points. An opener against a Teddy Bridgewater-less Vikings could extend that streak, but dont get too excited if they do. Tennessee is 9-36 in all other weeks in that time.31. Cleveland Browns2015 record:?3-13 Preseason ranking: No. 31Robert Griffin III will get his first regular-season action since Week 17 of 2014. If the preseason is any indication, it should be interesting. Griffins three preseason touchdowns went for 50, 29 and 43 yards, respectively.32. San Francisco 49ers2015 record: 5-11 Preseason ranking: No. 32The 49ers were exciting on Monday Night Football in Week 1 last season, beating the Vikings, 20-3. Things went downhill from there, but recreating that Monday night magic this year could at least get the 49ers out of the cellar for a week or two in the Power Rankings. Cheap Shoes Wholesale China . Finally healthy, Cochran broke through with a win that thrust him back into title contention on the Champions Tour. Cochran won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career senior circuit title, closing with a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Jay Don Blake. Cochran, who battled through rib and wrist injuries last season, finished at 11-under 205 at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines. The left-hander, who entered the day two strokes behind second-round leader Duffy Waldorf, broke a winless streak that stretched 35 tournaments. "I didnt really expect to win. But I knew I could compete and get in contention. Of course, when you do that, sometimes good things happen," Cochran said. Blake shot 69. He bogeyed the par-3 17th with his first three-putt of the tournament to fall a stroke behind. He had a chance to force a playoff, but his birdie try on the par-4 18th missed to the right. "I quit on the stroke. I didnt make a good stroke. I kind of de-accelerated and left it out there to the right," Blake said. Waldorf had a 71, his only round above 70 all weekend, to tie for third at 9 under with Mark Calcavecchia and Kirk Triplett. Calcavecchia and Triplett shot 67. Peter Senior was alone in sixth at 8-under par. Throughout the final round, it felt as though someone was going to hit a great shot to seize control of the tournament. Instead, it was a poor tee shot by Blake that opened the door for Cochran. Blake left his first effort on the 174-yard 17th hole about 50 feet short, and it took three putts to find the hole. Cochran, playing a hole ahead, made par on 18 to put the onus on Blake. Though Blake couldnt come through on the last hhole, he still managed his second second-place finish of the year and the fifth of his career.dddddddddddd "From then on, it just seemed like I was a little bit cautious with the putter. I wasnt stroking as aggressive as I was before," Blake said after his tee shot on No. 17. Cochran would have been just a shot off the lead entering Sunday if he hadnt missed a 3-foot putt on No. 18 in the second round. He didnt let that miscue affect him early on, leaning on a tweak he made to his putting mechanics late on Saturday for a strong finish on the greens. Cochran birdied three of the first five holes -- including on a par-3, 4 and 5 -- to grab the lead from Waldorf. Waldorf caught Cochran at 9-under at the end of the front nine, where they were joined in the lead by a surging Blake. Blake bogeyed two of the first three holes before ripping off birdies on six of nine holes. But Blake missed a 2-footer for the lead at No. 13, and he and Cochran stayed even until Cochran birdied No. 15 for a one-shot lead. Cochran then missed a 4-footer for par at No. 16, and both stood at 11-under heading into the final two holes. In the end, Blakes putting abandoned him at the worst possible time. Blake is "a tremendous putter. I didnt want to ... see him roll it in with all the confidence, and I just felt like he would make it. Being such a good friend, I wanted him to make it," Cochran said. Points leader Bernhard Langer shot a 69 to salvage even-par for the tournament. But Langer has finished out of the top 10 in four straight tournaments after he finished either first or second four times to start the year. Jay Haas, who has won in Iowa three times, made a late run at the leaders with a 4-under 68 on Sunday. He finished with seven others at 7-under. ' ' '
MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier can only do so much. The Minnesota Twins, already hamstrung by poor pitching, have lost their way at the plate, too.Matt Boyd breezed through eight innings, backed by home runs from James McCann and Miguel Cabrera as the Detroit Tigers beat the Twins 8-1 on Tuesday night to step forward to cut the deficit between them and the second AL wild card spot to 1 1/2 games.Boyd (6-4) bounced back from an 8-1 defeat by the Twins at home last week, giving up a homer to Robbie Grossman in the seventh among only three hits allowed. He matched his career best with seven strikeouts and walked just one, after being pounded by Minnesota for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings on Sept. 13.Dozier had a lonely leadoff single in the bottom of the first and stole second base with none out, only to be stranded. Max Kepler walked in the second inning and was quickly caught stealing. Then Boyd retired 14 straight batters until Grossman went deep with one out in the seventh. He was on tonight, and youve got to tip your hat to him, said Twins center fielder Byron Buxton. The Twins, who allowed eight or more runs for the 39th time in this awful season, have scored just five times in the last four games. With Trevor Plouffe, Eddie Rosario, Miguel Sano and Joe Mauer injured, the Twins have lost some punch. You can tell that some of the guys who arent used to playing this long into the season, maybe taking a little bit of a toll, but youve got to try to find a way to finish as strongly as you can, manager Paul Molitor said.Hector Santiago (12-9), who lost for the first time in his last five starts, wasnt exactly a hard-luck loser. He gave up a three-run shot into second deck above left-center in a four-run sixth to McCann. Cabrera hit his 34th homer the following inning, a two-run drive against Michael Tonkin.Detroit played without designated hitter Victor Martinez (bruised knee) and second baseman Ian Kinsler (concussion-like symptoms), both having been hit by pitches from Clevelands Trevor Bauer on Sunday. You take away two pitches, I think its a different game, said Santiago, who lasted 5 1/3 innings.MIGGY CAN MOVECabrera started the fourth inning by crushing a double to right field, sliding in to beat the throw. The hulking power hitter hustled to advance a base on a flyout to medium-range center field. Then he rumbled home for a 2-0 lead on a groundout to third, sneaking his foot underneath catcher John Ryan Murphys tag after the throw home to try to get the double play.We had three chances to throw out Cabrera. I dont know if you ever see that, Molitor said.Santiago teasingly shouted, What are you doing? to Cabrera when he backed up third on the tag-up throw.I think he caught everybody off guard, Santiago said.Cabrera is batting .375 in 32 at-bats over seven games at Target Field this season, all Tigers victories, with five doubles, three homers, seven runs and six RBI.STILL STREAKINGDozier stretched his hitting streak to 23 straight games, the longest for the Twins in nine years since Torii Hunter had one of the same length and the fourth-longest in the major leagues this season. Its just one of those things where he keeps finding a way to get it done, said Molitor, who was booed when he pulled Dozier for a pinch hitter in the ninth.ROSARIO WONT RETURNRosario was diagnosed with a broken left thumb after diving into first base trying to beat out a grounder in the game on Saturday, and hell need six weeks to recover. After a rough start that led to his demotion to Triple-A in May, Rosario rebounded and became one of nine Twins players to reach 10 home runs. This is the first year theyve had that many since 2004.TRAINERS ROOMSano (sore back) missed his seventh straight game, but hes been taking groundballs and batting practice and should be able to play this week. Mauer was given another rest for his ailing quadriceps.UP NEXTRHP Buck Farmer (0-0, 4.07 ERA in 13 relief appearances) will make his first start of the season for the Tigers on Wednesday night. Twins RHP Jose Berrios (2-7, 8.88 ERA) will take the mound for the 13th time. He finished only four innings in his last turn, but the rookie allowed two runs to match a season low. Topics this week include Kirk Cousins upcoming contract negotiations, Anquan Boldins impact in Detroit, the promise of Cody Kessler and more.Cousins has leverage in his cornerOver the past two weeks, on prime-time TV, Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has thrown for a staggering 824 yards and six touchdowns. The only bigger numbers are the ones Cousins is staring straight at making salarywise. If Washington and Cousins cannot reach a long-term deal this offseason -- and theres plenty of incentive for the Redskins quarterback not to do one -- his franchise tag will be worth $23,943,600. If Cousins doesnt reach a long-term agreement with Washington and plays on that tag, the 2018 franchise tag would be for a staggering $34,478,784.Thus if Washington and Cousins cannot reach an agreement on a long-term deal the next two years, and the Redskins use their franchise tag on him both years, it will cost them a combined $58,422,384. Just as significant, Washington would be prohibited from tagging Cousins after the 2018 season, allowing him to hit the market as a true unrestricted free agent, something almost no experienced, established, healthy starting quarterback ever has had the chance to do.But because Cousins stands the chance to make so much on franchise tags, Washington will need to offer him even more in guaranteed money to persuade him to stay. If the two sides can work out a long-term agreement, and there is plenty of incentive for both sides to do it, Cousins guaranteed money will need to be well north of the $58.5 million he stands to make in the next two franchise tags.Cousins already was in rare territory. He joins Drew Brees as the only other quarterback ever allowed to play out a season on a franchise tag. The difference is, the Chargers had Philip Rivers backing up Brees; the Redskins have Nate Sudfeld.Arguments about Cousins value can continue for months. But no one can argue about this: No quarterback in the league has more leverage than Cousins.-- Adam SchefterDont forget about Anquan BoldinIn a week where Larry Fitzgerald is about to settle into third place all-time for pass receptions, lets not forget the remarkable deeds of his good friend and former teammate Anquan Boldin. While Fitzgerald is likely to finish his career where it started in Arizona, Boldins NFL trek finds him with his fourth team, the Detroit Lions.?Those travels dont diminish Boldins own potential Hall of Fame career. He stands 15th on the all-time receiving list (1,037 catches, 13,587 yards, 80 touchdowns). The Lions notably have won all seven of their games in the fourth quarter. One can justify an argument that six of those wins dont happen without Boldin making a clutch catch or two during those critical moments. Its not an accident, says Lions coach Jim Caldwell, who was the playcaller when Boldin caught four touchdown passes during the 2012-13 postseason for the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. If you would see his workout, youd be absolutely amazed, Caldwell said.Least surprised about Boldins relevance in his 14th season is Kurt Warner, who bolstered his Hall of Fame credentials during his final five seasons in Arizona, where he enjoyed both Fitzgerald and Boldin as his pass-catchers.?As great as Fitz was and is, when I needed a play, I looked for Anquan, Warner said. That says a lot. We fed off Anquans competitiveness.Warner has nice comparables from his time with the St. Louis Rams, where he had the company of Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Orlando Pace on the offensive side of the football.?I never played with a tougher, more competitive person than Anquan, Warner said.Boldins success can be personal for Warner. Warner has a son, Kade, who just finished his senior football season at Desert Mountain High in Scottsdale, Arizona, as the states all-time receiver with 243 career catches. Despite those numbers and size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), he is not being highly recruited even though his highlights show someone who has mastered the route tree, has excellent hands and blocks fiercely when called upon, and whose competitiveness jumps off the screen.?Its no coincidence that Kade Warner wears jersey number 81 -- Boldins number for his first 13 seasons until he switched to 80 out of deference to the Lions all-time receiver, Calvin Johnson, who retired at 30 following the 2015 season. Not to stretch the comparison, but the young Warner isnt fast by todays standards. Of course, neither was Boldin, who came out of Florida State as the Cardinals second-round pick running a pedestrian 4.71 in the 40. All Boldin did is set a record that still stands in his rookie season with 101 catches. And if Boldin ran 4.71 as a younger man, most observers believe he may not crack 4.85 if he were timed today. Yet there Boldin is, week in and week out, making big third-down and red zone catches for the Lions. The league always has a place for someone who makes contested catches, said Phil Simms, the former New York Giants quarterback who called the Lions-Vikings game on Thanksgiving for CBS. Boldin did it for the Cardinals when they almost won a Super Bowl. He did it for the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl. He may not be fast, but he is thick, he is strong and he can put more leverage on a defender than most tight ends.Simms then tapped into his own playing bank: When I watch Boldin, it reminds me of when [Bill] Parcells used to ask me why I didnt throw it to [tight end] Mark Bavaro on certain plays. Id say something stupid like, Well, he wasnt open, and Parcells would say, When you throw it, hes open. Of course, he was right. And I think you say the same thing about Boldin wherever hes been.-- Chris MortensenKessler in a class of his ownAs hard as it is to imagine, Cody Kessler now has the highest passer rating of any Browns quarterback since the team returned to Cleveland in 1999 -- and really, its not even close (minimum 100 pass attempts).1. Cody Kessler, 92.6 2. Josh McCown, 85.3 3. Kelly Holcomb, 83.3 4. Brian Hoyer, 77.6 5. Jason Campbell, 76.9Now, there are a lot of factors that go into this. As my colleague Chris Mortensen points out, passer rating is a blurry measure at best. Former Browns quarterbacks Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb helped lead Cleveland to the playoffs and were better quarterbacks than Kessler at this stage of his career. Former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson also won 10 games and went to the Pro Bowl in 2007, despite the fact that his completion percentage was skewed because of the number of downfield throws. But Kesslers play has warranted that the Browns consider him for a quarterback job that will be the subject of much speculation again this offseason. The Browns bypassed the opportunity to draft Carson Wentz, passed on the chance to draft Dak Prescott eight different times and invested in Kessler, who has been steady. But the biggest question Cleveland will have to answer is whether it is enough. Maybe it is, maybe it isnt, but no other quarterback since the Browns returned to Cleveland has had a higher passer rating than Kessler -- which speaks as much to Clevelands history of quarterbacks as it does to its present situation.-- Adam SchefterHow Logan Thomas came to embrace switching to TEThe story of Logan Thomas starts a new chapter, inspired, perhaps, by Terrelle Pryor and Mike Tice, and influenced by Tyrod Taylor.Follow along ...Thomas became more than just a transaction Wednesday, when the Buffalo Bills signed him to their 53-man roster two days after the Detroit Lions scooped him up on the practice squad as a tight end.?The tight end designation by the Bills, as well, signals an acceptance by Thomas to finally abandon his dream of playing quarterback in the NFL. The former Virginia Tech QB was a fourth-round draft choice in 2014 by the Arizona Cardinals, but he didnt stick there. The Giants and Dolphins briefly signed him as a quarterback before also moving on.Thomas has contemplated -- but ultimately resisted -- a switch to tighht end for much of his playing career, dating back to high school.dddddddddddd Even though he played quarterback at Brookville High in Lynchburg, many recruiting services listed him as the top-rated tight end prospect of the 2009 college class. Thomas has always been a unique athlete: Brookville retired his basketball jersey; he was a renowned track and field performer in multiple events; and he did flash early in high school as a receiver before moving to quarterback. Why tight end? Thomas is 6-foot-6, 248 pounds, he has almost 11-inch hands and runs 4.6 in the 40. He has a great arm, but his accuracy and feel for the quarterback position just havent worked in his brief NFL stops.Several teams mentioned the tight end switch prior to the 2014 NFL draft, but Thomas made it clear he had no interest in playing anything but quarterback, where he had started for three years at Virginia Tech. This is where Pryor enters the story: Pryor was also an elite athlete and quarterback at Ohio State who was drafted by the Raiders (2011-2013) before he bounced around a few teams without securing a roster spot. Finally, he listened hard when Browns coach Hue Jackson pitched the receiver switch. Now Pryor is about to make some big bucks -- a shining star receiver in Clevelands own black hole.An unemployed Thomas had tried out as a quarterback and tight end for teams in the past month before he signed with the Lions on Monday. One team did not feel Thomas had much enthusiasm when he worked out at tight end.?The Lions had a plan that would work on that transition the rest of this season on the practice squad and next offseason (another reason why the offseason restrictions need to be reviewed). The Bills, somewhat decimated by injuries, saw it as a sign Thomas was willing to embrace the switch, and he is now the third tight end on the roster. It wont be an easy road for Thomas. One personnel man said: Hell have to totally buy in like Pryor, but tight end is an even bigger challenge for a former quarterback than switching [to] receiver, or running back, or safety.?When you look at him physically, he is big, strong and has the ability to move, but can he run those routes, get separation, master the assignments that are demanded at tight end, as well as put his hand on the ground and be willing to block somebody? Its not simple. In fact, its difficult to find examples of guys who were quarterbacks in college but without any prior experience at tight end. The Redskins Jordan Reed was recruited to Florida as a quarterback but eventually switched to tight end in college.Oh, Mike Tice? Hes now the offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders. He was Marylands starting quarterback as a junior and senior (1979-80) but had no real NFL future at the position. Tice was a mountain of a man at 6-foot-7, 235 pounds, who would sometimes execute a toss sweep from under center for the Terrapins and manage to run interference for his halfback. Tice signed as an undrafted free agent tight end prospect with the Seattle Seahawks and enjoyed a 15-year career. As for Tyrod Taylor, the current Bills quarterback, he knows Thomas has decent hands. Thomas was Taylors backup as a redshirt freshman in 2010, but he played receiver occasionally and caught his only touchdown pass from Taylor (2 yards) at Virginia Tech in a 52-21 win over Wake Forest.-- Chris MortensenPlaying in the Golden State comes at a golden priceCalifornia can be costly, as the Carolina Panthers are about to find out on their extended West Coast trip that started last Friday and continues this week, until the team arrives in Seattle for Sundays Week 13 game. The week-plus in California, combined with Carolinas trip to the state back in January and February for Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, means the Panthers players now will be subject to California income tax for the days they worked in the state this year. California has the highest individual state income tax rate at 13.3 percent.Using that rate with the number of days the Panthers have spent in California means Carolina quarterback Cam Newton will owe California approximately $220,000 in estimated income tax this year, according to certified public accountant Robert Raiola. Newton will be able to take a partial tax credit in North Carolina, but hes not going to get away without first paying a hefty tax bill to California.A second-year Panthers player such as wide receiver Devin Funchess will face a 2016 California tax bill of approximately $5,000.Raiola computed similar figures for the Dolphins after they spent 11 days in California earlier this month, and he found that Miami defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will have to pay an additional $150,000 in California income tax this year.So as much as players enjoy California trips, they pay dearly for them as well.-- Adam SchefterCowboys QB depth: What a difference a year makesWhen the Dallas Cowboys entered the 2016 offseason in March, perhaps their biggest question was whether they would ever secure their quarterback depth chart and avoid the embarrassing 1-11 record they suffered without an injured Tony Romo in 2015.?It was still a topic for conversation when the Cowboys failed to sign or trade for a veteran quarterback, and the fourth-round draft pick of Dak Prescott generated little confidence the problem had been resolved. Now? Of all the teams in position for the playoffs, the Cowboys undoubtedly have the best quarterback depth chart in the NFL, with Prescott as the starter, Romo as the backup and Mark Sanchez as third-string security. Not that Cowboys fans can still be bitter about that 4-12 season in 2015. It secured them the fourth overall pick in the 2016 draft, and with that opportunity came Ezekiel Elliott.-- Chris MortensenEmptying the notebookWest Alabama, a rural Division II school, has become a must-visit for NFL scouts. Last NFL weekend alone, three former West Alabama standouts stood out. Kansas City wide receiver Tyreek Hill became the first player with a rushing touchdown, receiving touchdown and kick return touchdown in the same game since Gale Sayers did it against the Vikings on Oct. 17, 1965; Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler forced and recovered a key fumble against the New York Jets; and Raiders wide receiver Seth Roberts caught three passes for 31 yards, including a touchdown in the win against the Panthers. Maybe it shouldnt be such a surprise. West Alabama coach Brett Gilliland was a graduate assistant helping with receivers on the 2006 Georgia Tech staff that had Fred Biletnikoff Award winner Calvin Johnson. In the wake of those seven fourth-quarter comeback victories, Lions coach Jim Caldwell was asked if he had any superstitions. He didnt. If superstitions would come true, wed have a lot of teams winning games, he said.Something that didnt start this week but has been happening for a while is that some around the league have been questioning the manner in which the Rams develop offensive linemen, long before Los Angeles deactivated 2014 second overall draft pick Greg Robinson. Benching Robinson only reinforced that notion. When Giants QB Eli Manning apologized to rookie receiver Sterling Shepard for not being targeted once on Sunday against the Browns, it was a reminder of a practice for many quarterbacks, including Eli and his retired brother Peyton, who visited the team this week. That practice? Get your receivers their targets early so theyll run every route the rest of the game as if the ball is coming their way.Success in the NFL oftentimes is knowing your own roster; it has been one of the biggest issues in Cleveland. Saints wide receiver Willie Snead, Falcons wide receiver Taylor Gabriel and Patriots running back Dion Lewis all would look good in Cleveland. They actually were there. But at various times, the Browns cut each one of them.-- Adam Schefter and?Chris Mortensen ' ' '
