The Kansas City Chiefs had a 32-27 lead over the Tennessee Titans in the fourth quarter last Sunday with under two minutes to go Reggie Ragland Jersey , simply needing a first down on third-and-2 to ice the game. By now, we all know what happened. The Chiefs made a very questionable play-call: a screen pass to tight end Blake Bell. The Titans covered it well and Patrick Mahomes slid, taking a sack and a loss of five yards.Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy told the media on Friday that Bell was “the only option on that play.”“Every week, we sit and have these discussions or scenarios that come up,” said Bieniemy. “Kudos to Tennessee — they did a heck of a job. They defended it, they made the play when they needed to make it. We didn’t make the play.”Bieniemy added that the Chiefs discussed going for it on fourth down had they not lost yardage on the play.“That was a scenario that was discussed, but we also felt pretty good about our special teams,” said Bieniemy. “We felt that we would get it done. One thing we do as a staff, we always sit and go through the scenarios. We plan each and every game out. When it’s all said and done with, we make each and every decision wholeheartedly. These two teams represent two of the three worst teams in the NFL along with the New York Giants. Each of which has one win on the season.Last week the Cardinals also had just one win. Then they beat the 49ers. Two weeks ago the Colts had one win. Now they have three, coming off a 42-28 win over the Raiders in Oakland.One of either the 49ers or Raiders will get their second win of the season on Thursday night. Every team wants to win, but the team that doesn’t will give itself the advantage in terms of draft position.As you recall, the Raiders and 49ers finished last season with identical 6-10 records and identical strength of schedule. This led to their draft position being decided by a coin flip. The 49ers won that coin flip and then took Mike McGlinchey at 9th overall which is who the Raiders were eyeing with their pick at 10 overall.Once again, these two teams will be battle for draft position and once again they could be eyeing the same prospect with their top pick — Nick Bosa.Bosa is the younger brother of Chargers’ All Pro pass rusher Womens Bo Jackson Jersey , Joey Bosa, and is the most highly regarded player in the draft. And the Raiders BY FAR the worst pass rushing team in the league.The Ohio State pass rusher had four sacks in three games this season before being lost for the season with an abdominal injury. In 14 games last season, he had 8.5 sacks and 16.0 tackles for loss.Should these three teams each finish among the worst records in the league, the Giants will be the one looking quarterback in the draft. The Raiders and 49ers already have their quarterbacks. The 49ers have Jimmy Garoppolo, whose torn ACL knocked him out for the season, and the Raiders have Derek Carr. That is, of course, unless Carr finishes the season poorly, at which point the Raiders might consider a QB such as Oregon’s Justin Herbert. But at this moment, Bosa is considered the name the two (current) Bay Area teams would be after at the top of the draft.This figures to be the final Battle of the Bay. Football is a pretty simple game. In the modern NFL Cheap Trey Hopkins Jersey , you don’t win by kicking field goals, you win by scoring touchdowns. The Bengals’ offense has been frustrating in many ways, but their lack of production in the red zone has been damning. The offense has struggled to keep drives alive throughout the season, but even when they do put together a sustained drive it often stalls in the red zone. Not only have they been bad in the red zone, they have been the worst in the league through 10 weeks of the 2019 NFL season.Generally, people see the red zone as inside the 20-yard line. I see the red zone starting at the 25 and dividing into three zones. The red zone (25-13), the tight red zone (12-4), and goal line (3-GL). This article will focus on the red zone and goal line. There are two important things to consider when calling plays in different field zones. First is obviously space. As you get closer to the goal line, the defense will get closer to you. The second is how the defense changes their calls in different field zones. Let’s take a look at some plays that the Bengals could have success running in the red zone and goal line against the Oakland Raiders.Red Zone It is important for an offensive play caller to distinguish between the red zone and the tight red zone, because as the offense gets closer to the goal line, they are no longer able to run deeper pass concepts. Which gives us the perfect segway to talking about four verticals. In the picture above, the Raiders are in a one-high defense and the Texans are in a 2x2 formation, with two wide receivers on one side and a wide receiver and an H-back on the other. In the past, the Bengals were very good in the red zone and one of the big reasons was tight end Tyler Eifert. The Bengals could line Eifert up at H-back and make him the primary receiver with Tyler Boyd in the slot opposite him. Quarterback Ryan Finley would read the safety and throw away from his leverage. If the Raiders came out in a two-high look, Eifert would bend his route between the safeties. If the opposite safety jumps his route, the ball goes to Boyd. If the safety near Eifert chases, the ball would go to the outside receiver or the checkdown. In either case, Finley could also take a shot to any one of the receivers if he thought they had a favorable matchup. I have written extensively on ways that the Bengals could get the ball to running back Joe Mixon in the pass game. Well, here is one more. In the clip above, the Texans are essentially in a bunch formation, but instead of three receivers bunched up, they get the same effect from an H-back, a tight wide receiver, and an off-set running back.The tight end releases into the flat and the receiver releases on an inside vertical route. The running back releases vertically and runs a corner route. The defense is in two-man. The routes of the receiver and H-back make it difficult for the Mike linebacker to get to the running back’s route. The receiver pressing into the seam keeps the safety on the hash. As a result, the running back is wide open, but Deshaun Watson does not have enough time to get the ball off. Duke Johnson scored a touchdown on this play earlier in the game when the Texans were in Cover 1.In the above clip, the Chargers came out in a trips formation and threw a swing to the running back. Concurrently all three receivers on that side ran vertically, with the No. 3 receiver bending across the safety’s face. Note how when the ball is thrown to the back, the defenders lined up over the No. 2 and No. 3 receiver react and run up to make the tackle. As a result, the No. 2 WR is wide open running down the seam.The Bengals could run the same play, but with one key difference: they would make sure that Finley’s pass to Mixon was in fact a lateral. When the defenders run up to tackle him, he can throw the ball to the wide open receiver in the seam. Think he can’t do it? Look below.Goal LineWhen you get into the goal line, you have to be able to score. Now you are literally a few feet away from the end zone. Successful teams win in these situations. The Bengals have scored twice on the pass above. It is designed to get Mixon open in the flat, and it is effective Clayton Fejedelem Jersey Limited , but after running it twice, they need to add a wrinkle have another play that works off of it. Of course, the most obvious play would be a jet sweep to the motioning receiver. That is a good play, but based on the way the Raiders have lined up to this type of formation, I do not think it would be effective. But something similar could work.I have diagrammed my idea above. Mixon and Dalton would carry out the same motion, but Dalton would give the ball to the motioning receiver, but he wouldn’t simply run and try to get to the edge. The motion man would get the ball deeper in the backfield. The best way to do this would be to run the play out of the shotgun, but a higher “orbit” motion would work as well. The Raiders are in man, which is common for them on the goal line and against bunch in general. First the offensive line would all reach to the right and it is of the utmost importance that they at least stalemate their opponents. The inside receiver would release outside of the defender lined up on him and hitch up about four yards deep into the end zone. This will do two things. It will prevent his defender from chasing the ball carrier and it will block the defender who is covering the ball carrier in man from running him down. The outside receiver will release wide outside staying on the line of scrimmage before stuttering his feet in front of the defender and releasing to the back pylon. If the defender runs with him, there will be no more defenders on the edge and the ball carrier can run in for a touchdown. If the defender lets him go and steps up to tackle the jet sweep, the ball carrier will pop the ball right over his head, throwing a touchdown pass to the receiver. It doesn’t even have to be a good pass. It just has to be in bounds. As mentioned above, the Raiders play a lot of man coverage on the goal line. With that in mind, the Bengals could run a pick play with the inside receiver going out and the outside receiver going in. That’s what the Chargers did in the clip above and the Bengals ran a similar play on Eifert’s touchdown against the Ravens last week. They can also stack receivers in order to create picks. Knowing that the Raiders are likely to be in man coverage, they could isolate a receiver on one side of the formation. For example, they could get a big receiver like Auden Tate all by himself and look to throw a fade or fade stop. Now I know what you are thinking:Why are you talking so much about passing the ball on the goal line? Although I am a big fan of Pete Carroll, you make a good point. They should really run the ball. The Raiders have seen a good amount of bunch and the picture above gives an example of their typical defensive alignment to it.Toss is a great play out of the bunch formation.I have been outspoken about my hatred of running toss out of the shotgun. Also, in this picture the back is on the wrong side to run the toss out of shotgun. So I drew it up as a handoff and a wide sweep, but it could certainly be a toss from under center. The No. 1 and No. 2 receivers would both block down, No. 1 on the defensive end, No. 2 on the linebacker. That would leave two players on the edge. The No. 3 receiver would block out on the 1st and the left guard would pull around and lead up on the other. The left tackle would block down on the 3-technique to facilitate this.The center would shoot up to the middle linebacker and the right guard would scoop out the nose tackle while the right tackle blocks pursuit.This play would get Mixon on the edge and allow him to read off those blocks which is something he is very good at. The closest distance between two points is a straight line, so why not run right at the defense? The picture above shows the Raiders defending an I-formation with two tight ends and an H-back. I’d call it “I Wing.” Last year the Bengals used Sam Hubbard as a full back. They could do that again here and run Power.The H-back and right tight end would each block out. The full back would make sure the right tackle had not given up penetration on his block, then work up to the second level (#42).The right tackle and right guard would double-team the 3-technique and work up to the middle linebacker. The left guard would pull around and block #59. The left tackle and left tight end would step down and block the most dangerous players.Switching to gap-based schemes like this has helped the Bengals in recent weeks. They could have success running Power on the goal line. The Bengals have the worst red zone offense in the NFL, but there is no reason that needs to be the case. Their offensive staff needs to put an emphasis on game-planning for the red zone and goal line. They need to look specifically at the defenses that the Raiders run against specific formations in these field zones and figure out what plays they can run successfully. There is no excuse for not fixing this major problem. A look at the most impactful football free agents of all time:1. DE Reggie White, 1993 Green Bay Packers.White stunned the NFL by choosing Green Bay after a whirlwind tour in the first offseason of unfettered free agency. His arrival at age 32 signaled a new era for the Packers, who hadn't found much success since the Vince Lombardi teams of the 1960s. White teamed with Brett Favre for a long run of success that included a win over the Patriots in Super Bowl 31. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.2. QB Peyton Manning, 2012 Denver Broncos.Manning was coming off neck fusion surgery that sidelined him in 2011 when the Colts released him so they could turn their team over to rookie Andrew Luck. Despite the uncertainty over his health, Manning was courted by several teams and chose the Broncos. He set numerous passing records in Denver and led the Broncos to two Super Bowls, losing to the Seahawks in 2014 but beating the Panthers two years later in the final game of his storied career.3. QB Drew Brees, 2006 New Orleans Saints.Brees hit the open market at age 27 after he sustained a serious injury to his throwing shoulder in the 2005 season finale. The Chargers turned to Philip Rivers, whom they had acquired in a draft-day trade in 2004, and Brees became the rare young QB to get to test free agency. He chose New Orleans, which itself was making a comeback from Hurricane Katrina. The Saints won their only Super Bowl in 2010, over the Colts. Last season William Jackson Jersey Limited , Brees surpassed Favre for most career completions.4. DB Deion Sanders, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1995 Dallas Cowboys.After five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, Sanders went to San Francisco and helped the 49ers win the Super Bowl over the San Diego Chargers. Then he promptly left for Dallas in 1995 and helped lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Also a "prime time" kick returner, his stay in Dallas also included three first-team All-Pro honors, and Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.5. TE Shannon Sharpe, 2000, Baltimore Ravens.After winning back-to-back Super Bowl rings in Denver, Sharpe went to the Ravens and promptly won another. He had a 96-yard touchdown catch in the AFC championship game. In his two seasons in Baltimore, Sharpe broke tight end records for career catches, yards and touchdowns, all marks that were previously held by the man who signed him, ex-Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. Sharpe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.6. DB Charles Woodson, 2006 Green Bay Packers.Woodson was considered one of the biggest risks to hit the open market because he hadn't played a full season in four years and only played in six games during his final season in Oakland. The Packers were his only suitors and he rewarded them with a career comeback that included NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2009 and a Super Bowl ring after the 2010 season.7. QB Kurt Warner, 2005, Arizona Cardinals.Not only did Warner go from grocery clerk to NFL MVP and Super Bowl champ while orchestrating the "Greatest Show on Turf" in St. Louis, he had another career comeback in him with the Cardinals. After starting 3-12 in Arizona and getting benched for Matt Leinart, he won back his starting job and led the Cardinals to an improbable appearance in Super Bowl 43, where they lost 27-23 to the Steelers. Enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2017.8. QB Rich Gannon, 1999, Oakland Raiders.Not much was expected of the 34-year-old journeyman when he joined a middling Raiders team and its young head coach, Jon Gruden. But Gannon flourished with his fourth NFL team, making four consecutive Pro Bowls, two All-Pro teams and three trips to the playoffs. He was the league's MVP in 2002 at age 37 and led the Raiders to Super Bowl 37 against Tampa Bay.9. I’m sharing my thoughts with you guys on what these prospects did well and what they bring to the Rams moving forward. We covered second-round pick S Taylor Rapp last time, and that can be found here.Going in order, next up is Memphis Tigers RB Darrell Henderson. Henderson was also a three-year starter in Memphis like Rapp, and he managed to rack up 431 rushing attempts, 3,545 rushing yards, 36 touchdowns, 63 receptions, 758 receiving yards Taylor Rapp Los Angeles Rams Jerseys , and eight receiving touchdowns in his college career.Let’s take a look at the write-up:Henderson doesn’t create much behind the line of scrimmage. Great fit in a zone blocking scheme. When running outside zone (the Rams ran more outside zone than any other NFL team last year), he shows solid vision, presses the line, and when appropriate, he makes one cut and goes. Good creator at the second level who also possesses breakaway speed. Productive runner from shotgun. Tough and has good balance when absorbing hits. Good hands though he wasn’t used a ton as a receiver. Upright running style. Can drop his shoulder and get physical. Enough speed and burst to reach the edge when appropriate. Solid patience which allows holes to develop. Finishes runs with power delivering big blows to defenders.Have a look at this play where Henderson is running outside zone. He fits the Rams’ running game absolutely perfectly, and that’s exactly why he was the choice of running back in the 2019 draft class. He often ran outside zone in college, so the jump to the NFL (within the Rams’ offense) should only require a small transition. Henderson’s ability will prove to be a major key in allowing RB Todd Gurley to rest long stretches because of his troubled knee. For that reason, that is exactly why I believe Henderson was the perfect addition. He isn’t a change-of-pace back or a “compliment” Los Angeles Rams Jerseys 2019 , he does the exact same things as Gurley does. Henderson is a picture-perfect fit in the zone blocking scheme, and that’ll ensure the Rams will truly have no drop-off when it comes to rotating between RB1 and RB2. We’ll see if he’s finally good to go again when the initial injury report drops on Wednesday, but he could factor in immediately if so.The X-factor here might be what we’ve seen the last two weeks from...RB Darrell Henderson, Jr.Hendo finally got a chance to get some legitimate playing time the last three weeks with Gurley’s Week 6 absence and Brown being on the sideline the last two games. The numbers weren’t overwhelming, but his explosiveness might have been. Juxtaposed against Gurley, Hendo looked much more sprite and might have earned a larger share of the jobshare coming out of the bye. I say might, because I have little to no certainty about how the Rams are going to approach this overall let alone in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.The offensive lineThis might be the elephant in the room. Whether it’s Gurley or Brown or Hendo, none have been the recipient of the kind of consistent room to operate that Gurley and former Rams RB C.J. Anderson enjoyed in 2018. Part of that has been declined performance from the veteran tackles in LT Andrew Whitworth and RT Rob Havenstein. Part of that has been poor play from the interior linemen. But part of that also has been the changing personnel that has included Joseph Noteboom at left guard Los Angeles Rams Jerseys Stitched , Brian Allen at center, Austin Blythe at right guard, Jamil Demby at both guard spots and (seemingly) now David Edwards at left guard. Should the Edwards-Allen-Blythe trio be locked in for the future, perhaps that could help get more consistency in their performances ahead.What’s heartening is that the talent around the offensive line should lower the bar for them. Between the running backs and the passing game targets, there’s a TON of talent that can make even mediocre blocking adequate. We’ll need QB Jared Goff to elevate the offense and play better under duress, but that’s kind of the challenge a fourth-year quarterback deserves to face.The numbers aren’t great. The performances overall haven’t been either. They’ve got a negative rushing DVOA per Football Outsiders. The Rams are averaging less than 100 yards per game which puts them in the bottom half of the league. They’re averaging less than four yards per carry which puts them in the bottom third.Yes, the Rams need to get better on the ground. The question is whether or not the Rams can get to the playoffs if it doesn’t. We’ll see if that question needs to be asked if the ground game doesn’t get going coming out of the bye.
